A former Trotwood, Ohio police officer apparently shot himself at his Phenix City apartment Wednesday minutes before local law enforcement were to arrest him on a murder warrant.
Lee County Sheriff Jay Jones said his office was asked Wednesday by Montgomery County, Ohio law enforcement to execute a warrant at the Phenix City residence of Tommy L. Swint, 43.
Jones said Swint was to be held at the Lee County Detention Facility until he could be extradited to Ohio. Earlier Wednesday, the Dayton (Ohio) Daily News reported that a Montgomery County grand jury had indicted Swint for the 1991 death of Tina Marie Ivery.
When Lee County deputies, assisted by Russell County deputies, went to Swint’s Steeple Crest apartment Wednesday afternoon, Jones said they heard what they believed to be a gun shot. Upon entering Swint’s residence, he said the suspect was found dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Swint, a former Marine, was fired from the police department in 2007 after Richmond, Ind., police suspected him in the 2001 disappearance of Marilyn “Niqui” McCown, the newspaper reported.
Jones said the Alabama Bureau of Investigation is investigating Wednesday’s incident.
