A new 158,000 square-foot small animal teaching hospital was among the capital projects approved by the Auburn University board of trustees Friday.
“This project is the most important in the 118-year history of our college,” said Tim Boosinger, dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine.
The board approved a $70 million budget, funding plan and site and schematic designs for the new small animal teaching hospital.
The new building, which would include a teaching hospital, research labs and classrooms, would replace the aging McAdory Large Animal and Hoerlein Small Animal clinics, Boosinger said.
Dan King, assistant vice president for Facilities, said the project will demolish McAdory Hall and adjacent barns to make way for the new building. King said a renovation of the Overton Auditorium and Rudd Student Center building for more classroom space would be the first step in the project.
Boosinger said the new building and renovations would enable the college to increase enrollment by about 25 in the competitive program and advance research like AU’s canine detection program.
The project would be paid for with bonds, private gifts, increases in student fees and funding from Alabama and Kentucky, Boosinger said.
“If our college is going to continue to be a leader in veterinary research, our college needs a building like this,” Boosinger said.
