Word has it that audiences are in for a hilariously good time when the Auburn University Department of Theatre presents “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee” this month.
The Tony Award-winning, one-act musical by William Finn and Rachel Sheinkin gives viewers a comical glimpse into the lives of adolescents competing in an annual spelling bee.
As the story unfolds, the young people in the competition learn about themselves and that winning isn’t everything, despite messages they receive from their parents.
The production of “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee” is directed by AU associate professor of theatre Daydrie Hague. The musical is the first production of the year for the department.
Also, when the production takes the stage this month, audience members will be able to, as well.
“In all productions of this play, audience members are invited to come onstage and compete in the Spelling Bee,” Hague said. “That’s what makes each performance new and exciting.”
Special guest spellers slated to join the AU cast, include Lee County Sheriff Jay Jones, director of Auburn Day Cares Inc., Ethel J. White and former AU athletic director David Housel.
