A Russell County corrections officer is in custody and faces an assault charge after a shooting incident involving her husband Monday morning.
Candy McGuire, 34, who surrendered to authorities Monday, is being held at the Lee County Detention Facility on $10,000 bond in connection with a shooting incident involving her husband, Edwin McGuire Jr., 42, at their Lee Road 574 home, said Lee County Sheriff Jay Jones. She has been charged with first-degree domestic violence assault, but law enforcement officials said she could face a felony assault charge instead.
“We got the call at 7:17 a.m. from the home, which is located in the Smiths Station area, from a caller who stated that he had suffered a gunshot wound and indicated that his wife was involved,” Jones said.
Edwin McGuire Jr., was transported to Columbus (Ga.) Regional Medical Center, where he underwent surgery, Jones said. He is currently in critical condition at the hospital’s intensive care unit, said Lee County chief investigator Capt. Van Jackson.
“We’re still in the investigative phase of this incident, but it appears to have stemmed from an ongoing domestic dispute that took place (Sunday) night and early morning hours that culminated with the shooting,” Jones said.
Russell County Sheriff Tommy Boswell confirmed Monday that Candy McGuire has been employed with his office for the past seven months.
