The city of Valley is on track to have a new parks and recreation director hired in March.
Council member Ray Edwards, who heads the selection committee, announced Monday that the city received 32 applications for the job currently held by Suellen Snowden. He said the committee met last week and narrowed the choices to five.
Edwards said the committee will interview the final group March 2 and 3, and could make a recommendation to the city council soon after.
Snowden, who has been with the city for 15 years, will become manager of the city’s senior center when Diane Jones retires from the post next month.
In other matters, Mayor Arnold Leak proclaimed Saturday, Feb. 27 as Joe Louis Day in the city. A lifesize statue of the famous boxer will be unveiled in a public ceremony on the west side of the Chambers County Courthouse in LaFayette at 2 p.m. that day.
