Seats still available for Clubs' luncheon

Seats are still available for Wednesday’s fundraiser and luncheon for The Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Lee County, featuring Olympian Jackie Joyner-Kersee.
Club director Wanda Lewis said more than 200 people registered to attend by Friday’s deadline, however, they will accept reservations until the program begins at 11:30 a.m. in the Family Life Center of Greater Peace Baptist Church.
Lewis said she expects more people at this year’s lunch not just to support the local clubs, but to hear from the three-time Olympic gold medalist and Boys & Girls Club alumna.
“It certainly has not hurt at all that we invited Jackie Joyner-Kersee to celebrate our 20th year of existence,” Lewis said. “She is such a philanthropist. She gives back to her community in East St. Louis, Ill., through her foundation, including creating the Jackie Joyner-Kersee Boys & Girls Club there. She is something.”
The lunch kicks off the clubs’ annual fundraising campaign.
“We are glad to have Jackie come, but we really want people to understand why we are here,” she added.
Lewis said the Champion for Kids campaign needs to exceed its goal of $60,000 this year to help the clubs serve the growing numbers of young people joining them after school. In November, the Auburn City Council agreed to lease two more rooms to the clubs at the Boykin Community Center specifically to help accommodate the increasing enrollment.
“We hope to gain enough momentum from this to help the campaign,” she said.
