Employees of the Opelika-Auburn News had the highest team score in the first flight of the third annual bowling tournament to benefit the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Lee County Friday afternoon at Auburn Lanes.

The team of Jim Rainey, Jerry May, Wayne Snow and Amy Weaver bested the bowlers of six other teams — with a combined team score from two games of 967 — to earn four bowling pins, hand-painted by youngsters who attend the Auburn club.

Tournament organizer Alex Muncie said 20 teams spared part of their afternoon to participate in the fundraiser and support the local clubs. The event offered flights at 1 and 3 p.m. The amount raised from this year’s tournament was not known Friday night.

The annual fundraising campaign for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Lee County kicked off Wednesday with a luncheon featuring former Olympian Jackie Joyner-Kersee.
