The Auburn University Senate unanimously approved two nominees to the Rules Committee and heard updates about the status of a tuition program bill moving through the Legislature at its meeting Tuesday.
Evert Duin, an associate professor in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, and Andrew J. McLelland, an associate professor in the School of Accountancy, were approved for the committee which provides faculty nominations for university committees to the president’s office. Members serve two-year terms.
AU President Dr. Jay Gogue updated the senate on legislation making its way through the Legislature. House Bill 228, sponsored by Rep. Craig Ford, would cap tuition increases at 2.5 percent for students in the Alabama Prepaid Affordable College Tuition program. The bill, now before the Senate, mirrors a Senate proposal which leaves out the caps.
Gogue reiterated the university’s opposition to the House bill, noting it could cost the university $550 million during the lifetime of PACT.
Gogue also said there was uncertainty about state funds since the Legislature has not begun crafting a budget.
