The “timeless songs” of Nat King Cole will be performed at 7 p.m. Thursday at The Hotel at Auburn University and Dixon Conference Center as part of the play “Nat King Cole, As I know Him.”
Proceeds from the performance will benefit The Museum of East Alabama, which is currently undergoing renovations, said Ann Cipperly, who is handling publicity for the play.
“It is a combination of Nat King Cole’s songs and the story of his life,” Cipperly said. “It will be a great evening of entertainment with timeless songs that we rarely have the opportunity to experience in the Opelika-Auburn area. The theatre at the Dixon Conference Center only seats 350, so everyone will be able to enjoy the show. “
General admission tickets are $25, and patrons’ reception tickets are $75. Those who purchased patrons’ tickets will, in addition to reserved seating, be able to attend the patrons’ party before the play. The party begins at 5:30 p.m. The play begins at 7 p.m.
The party will give attendees the opportunity to meet Tim Wells, who in addition to helping create the play, is also the star. There will also be hor d’ oeuvres.
Wells, who co-wrote the play, will star as Amos Harris (founder of the Nat King Cole Society) and Nat King Cole.
“It’s a pleasure to be able to do this story,” he said. “Nat King Cole was a fascinating person. He did a lot of firsts. He was the first African American on a TV show. He was the first African American to be on a radio show.”
He added, “You’ll hear a lot about Nat King Cole’s life, and some songs.”
Tickets are available at the Opelika and Auburn chambers of commerce, Angel Antiques and Heritage Gifts and Gourmet.
