They’re cleaning up the city, one street at a time. This weekend Keep Opelika Beautiful will be conducting its Great American Cleanup event.
Saturday’s event marks the eighth year KOB has participated in the effort, said KOB director Tipi Miller.
“Each year we have groups of volunteers scattered throughout the city,” Miller said. “Our Adopt-A-Mile sponsors cleanup their portion of the roadways throughout the year and also on the day of the event.”
At this weekend’s Citywide Cleanup, the largest group of volunteers will be students from Opelika High School, Miller said. Students from Opelika Middle School and First Baptist Church of Opelika’s My Jerusalem Program, a combined effort of local churches, will also volunteer their time. Cleanup groups will be picking up areas along Railroad and Second avenues as well as George C. Bandy Park on South 7th Street.
“Our goal is to recycle the items that we pick up such as cans, cardboard and plastic bottles,” Miller said.
The national organization, Keep America Beautiful, has sponsors for the cleanup including GLAD (which is providing trash bags for the event), Pepsi and Nestle. Locally, the East Alabama Medical Center is providing gloves for KOB volunteers.
The city of Opelika will collect the trash bags following the event.
“One of the wonderful things about the Citywide Cleanup is the variety in ages participating in the event. Troops from the Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts will be participating, middle school students, high school students and members of local civic organizations, businesses and churches will all be participating,” Miller said. “Anyone can make our city a more beautiful place to live.”
