Flipping flapjacks, sizzling up sausages and heaping helpings of fellowship. While they might not be doing them in exactly that order, you’re sure to find a good time on the menu at Opelika Lions Club Pancake Jamboree next week.
“The batter sloppers will be fixing up pancakes as only they can,” said Jim Allen, Pancake Day chairman.
Last year, Lions Club members served up approximately 2,000 orders of pancakes at their Pancake Jamboree, Allen said.
This year, Allen said the group will go through nearly 800 pounds of pancake mix and 43 cases of sausage patties at the jamboree, which will take place at Opelika Middle School.
The proceeds raised from the Pancake Jamboree will go to support Lions Club programs, such as Miracle Field in Opelika, a venue where children and adults with disabilities can play baseball; the Lions Alabama Sight Program, which provides vision screenings, eyeglasses and eye surgeries for local residents who cannot afford them; and Camp ASCCA, which teaches young people with disabilities self-confidence.
Proceeds from Opelika Lions Club’s events will also go toward the purchase of uniforms for the Opelika High School band, Allen said.
During the Pancake Jamboree, nurses from Southern Union State Community College will be on hand offering free blood pressure checks and vision screenings to those in attendance. LifeSouth Community Blood Center representatives will also be present accepting blood donations.
It may be the food that gets some folks to turn out for the Jamboree, but Allen says it’s the fellowship that keeps them coming back year after year.
“This is just one of those classic Opelika events that brings people together who may see one another only that one time all year — but when you come to the Pancake Jamboree, you know you’re supporting good programs and getting to enjoy a delicious meal at the same time,” Allen said.
