Though we may disagree with many of his positions, we realize you don’t have to talk to Johnny Ford for very long to understand where he stands on the issues.
Ford has a long and successful track record in the region as a state representative and Tuskegee mayor. To sum: Johnny Ford gets things done within the district on a number of different political levels. Senate District 28 is a large district, encompassing Macon, Barbour, Clayton and parts of Houston and Lee counties. Ford is the only experienced candidate from the north end of the district, and we can never be certain that candidates from the south end would represent the needs of Macon and southwest Lee.
The Opelika-Auburn News endorses Ford over Howard Burton of Tuskegee, Locy Baker of Abbeville, Billy Beasley of Clayton, and Sam Harris of Auburn in the Democratic primary.
The winner will campaign against Republican Kim West in the general election.
Ford is the most pro-gambling candidate this newspaper has spoken with. There’s a reason for that, VictoryLand is crucial to Macon County’s economic viability. Ford says this is his last political go-around. We believe he deserves another shot in the Legislature.
Senate District 13
Kim Benefield had just one term in the Legislature and proved her worth every day. Her actions in Montgomery did not take the appearance of a political rookie.
Benefield elected to pass up a second term, and instead gave her full support to Ashland attorney Greg Varner, who shares the public’s frustration with Montgomery politics. If Varner has Benefield’s blessing, then Varner has our endorsement.
Varner is campaigning against Heflin entrepreneur Russell Emrick, who has a wealth of strong ideas promoting and protecting small business, and fighting for the rights of land-owners.
Residents of District 13 should be happy to know it has two very strong candidates in Varner and Emrick. The winner will meet Republican Gerald Dial in the general election.
