Endorsement: Beeker given nod over Cavanaugh for PSC Place 1

»  Comments | Post a Comment

Why shouldn’t Chris Beeker win the Alabama Public Service Commission Place 1 Republican primary next Tuesday? The Greene County businessman has been a steering force behind the county’s improved infrastructure and fight against utility inefficiency.

Come to think of it, isn’t this the type of candidate Alabama needs on its top utility regulatory board?

The Opelika-Auburn News endorses Beeker over Twinkle Cavanaugh, who has a strong political background and has made a run for the PSC before, and Stephen Evans. Regardless who wins this primary, the Republican victor will have a difficult time unseating Democrat Jan Cook, who is unopposed in the primary, this fall.

Beeker could conceivably do the same things for Alabama that he did in Greene County. His resume is outstanding.

Other than serving on the county commission, he helped the county receive a $10 million grant that extended water service throughout the area. Similar dedication on a statewide level could be fruitful for all.

During election season, the Public Service Commission certainly isn’t as glamorous as many races, but its positions hold responsibilities that affect the lives of all Alabamians when it comes to regulating utility rates and energy sources.

Let’s face it. Democrat Susan Parker will be extremely difficult to unseat in the general election. She has a strong reputation for her job with the Alabama Public Service Commission, is well regarded in her own party and even respected in many Republican circles. Like judicial races, partisan politics should never be an issue and we believe that is the case here.

Regardless, one of two Republican candidates will challenge the amicable Parker this fall, Chip Brown, a Mobile real estate broker, or Terry Dunn, an Etowah County developer.

Dunn takes a strong stance against Washington’s cap-and-trade, which he knows would increase power rates in the state. Dunn also wants to wage war against the rising cost of cable television.

Given many area residents’ bitter feelings toward cable television, we find Dunn intriguing and offer him the endorsement.
