Auburn City Council debates traffic issues
The Auburn City Council is scheduled to act tonight on a request from residents of Cary Drive to install a traffic-calming device in the neighborhood.
A majority — 69 percent — of residents in the affected area signed a petition supporting the implementation of a traffic circle as a means of calming traffic. City policy requires 66 percent of affected residents to agree before the matter could be brought to the council.
The council will meet at 7 p.m. in the city council chambers at 141 N. Ross St. There is no scheduled meeting for the Committee of the Whole. The council meeting is open to the public. Other items on the agenda include:
- Adding three stop signs and one 25-mph speed limit sign to the Shelton Cove
subdivision. - Making the intersection of Kimberly and Ferndale drives a three-way stop.
- A request to annex approximately 1.4 acres on the east side of Shady Springs Drive into the city limits.
n Loaning $175,000 through the Revolving Loan Fund program to Jim Parker Family Properties LLC, which is leasing property to Knology Inc. for its Auburn headquarters. The money will contribute to improvements of the office space.
Opelika City Council to review cable deals
The Opelika City Council is expected tonight to discuss a new non-exclusive franchise agreement with Knology, Inc., a West Point, Ga., telecommunications company.
The city and Knology came to terms on both franchise and pole attachment agreements last week. Tonight’s council meeting will include a first reading of the agreements. A public hearing on the franchise agreement is scheduled during the council meeting, which begins at 7 p.m. in the council chambers of Opelika City Hall, 204 S. 7th St.
David Canon, who was elected to the council last month in a special election, will be sworn in at the start of the meeting to fill the unexpired term of the late Dr. William Lazenby in Ward 5.
The council work session is scheduled at 6:10 p.m. Both meetings are open to the public. Other items on the agenda include:
- Approving the city’s 2011 operating budget.
- A request from Momma Goldberg’s for a retail beer on-premise license.
- Authorizing the repair of the wading pool at Covington Recreation Center.
