22-year-old man killed in motorcycle accident
A 22-year-old Columbus, Ga., man was killed Thursday night after he apparently drove his motorcycle the wrong way on U.S. Highway 280 in Phenix City.
Charles Daniel Hillhouse was driving a 1996 Honda CB750 motorcycle east in the westbound lane of U.S. Highway 280 when he struck several vehicles, according to Lee County Coroner Bill Harris.
Prior to the accident, Hillhouse had been at Greer’s Bar and Grill located on the westbound side of U.S. Highway 280 about a mile from where the accident occurred, Harris said.
The accident happened at 9 p.m., and Hillhouse was pronounced dead at the scene at 9:25 p.m., according to Harris. Hillhouse was wearing a helmet at the time of the accident, Harris said.
No injuries were reported by anyone in the westbound vehicles involved in the accident, Harris said.
Toxicology testing is being performed to determine whether alcohol was a factor in the accident, Harris said. The results from the tests were expected to be available by Friday afternoon, Harris said.
The accident remains under investigation by the Lee County coroner’s office and Alabama State Troopers.
