6 added to Tiger Trail

Six new plaques with the names of former Auburn University athletes now line the sidewalks of the city.

Maggie Bowen, AU women’s swimming, 2000-2003; Becky Jackson, women’s basketball, 1981-1984; Mike Kolen, football, 1966-1969; Morris M. Slingluff, men’s golf, 1961-1963; Sonny Smith, men’s basketball coach, 1979-1989; and Paul Susce, baseball, 1953-1956, were inducted into Tiger Trail at the Hotel at Auburn University Saturday morning.

“Including this year’s inductees, there are 91 total,” Jennifer Dodson of the Auburn Chamber of Conference said. “There’s very specific criteria (to be admitted). It’s a little different for each sport.”

The athletes are graded on what they did at AU only.

“There’s a secret selection committee,” she said. “They vote on the nominees.”

“This is an event we look forward to every each year,” Auburn Mayor Bill Ham said.

Kolen said he set the foundation for his life at Auburn.

“It’s such a privilege to be a part of this group. ... I got a great education here, I met my Lord here, I met the girl of my life here,” he said.
