A driver’s license checkpoint was set up on West Point Parkway, off of Interstate 85 Exit 64 on Sunday as part as part of a July 4 safety campaign put on by the Central Alabama Highway Safety Office.
The campaign began on Thursday and will continue through Monday, said Scott Moore, the highway safety coordinator for the Central Alabama Safety Office.
“(We’re) just making sure everybody is being safe on the roadways,” he said. “We have folks that are out there doing saturation patrols, some other check point patrols … marine police.”
The checkpoint on Sunday was a joint effort between the Opelika Police Department and the Lee County Sheriff’s Office, he said.
Moore said that law enforcement are making sure citizens are observing checking traffic laws as well as making sure that drivers are not driving while intoxicated. They are also checking for outstanding warrants, Moore said.
