About 100 boys gathered at Opelika High School Saturday for the fifth annual Back in the Dawg House football camp, where they got to rub elbows with former Opelika High football stars.
Will Herring, a former OHS and Auburn University star who now plays for the Seattle Seahawks, and SaJason Finley, a former OHS football star who went on to play college ball at Tuskegee University, started the camp.
They said they wanted to provide a service to children in the area and give back to the Opelika community.
“When you see them running around happy, it makes for a joyful moment,” Finley said. “You can lay aside your burdens and problems. I’m looking forward to next year.”
Herring added, “We’re excited about the turnout this year. The main thing is just for everybody to have a good time.”
The camp is held one Saturday a year and is free for fourth- through seventh-grade boys.
Bailey Saggus, 11, said he enjoyed the camp, especially the tackling dummies.
Several former stars participated, including Mike Willis, U.T. Ingram, Jay Stripes, Ashton Burton, Jonathan Chandler and Brooks Robinson.
