Opelika police are investigating two shootings that occurred early Sunday morning. One man was injured and another killed, according to a statement issued by police.
At the time the statement was released Sunday, police were unclear as to whether the two shootings were related.
Police responded to a call at about 1:30 a.m. Sunday at 1411 S. Long St.
When they arrived, they discovered Demecio Griffin, 25, of Opelika, who appeared to have been shot, lying in the roadway, according to the statement.
Griffin was conscious and talking, Lee County Chief Deputy Coroner Gene Manning said.
Griffin had been shot in the abdomen, Manning said.
EMS arrived on the scene, treated Griffin and transported him to East Alabama Medical Center, he said.
“From there, he went up to surgery, and he died in surgery,” Manning said. “(His body) was sent to Montgomery to have an autopsy performed.”
Eight minutes after they received the call regarding Griffin, Opelika police received a call to EAMC in reference to another gunshot victim, according to the police statement. Reginald Moffett, 44, of Salem, was also suffering from a gunshot wound.
Investigations of both incidents are ongoing.
Anyone with information on either or both incidents should call the OPD Investigative Services Division at 334-705-5220 or the OPD Secret Witness Hotline at 334-745-8665.

Wouldn’t these be good opportunities for the use of the Lee County Crime Stoppers line? It seems that local law enforcement would use every available means of locating information on events such as these. It is very disheartening that the number is not listed each time something like this happens.
