Apocalypse now!!

Amid all the hubbub about Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich’s legal trouble this week, I’ve fallen behind in telling you about one story that simply demands attention.

With apologies to Sports Illustrated, “This week’s sign that the Apocalypse is upon us” is that Fran Drescher—better known as “The Nanny” from her role as the title character of a goofy TV sitcom—wants to replace Hillary Clinton as one of New York’s United States senators.

Sign No. 2 of the Apocalypse is that Drescher apparently thought that a bunch of other people would agree that this is a good idea.

Caroline Kennedy? “P’shaw!“ Who needs a lifetime of political relationship building when you have Hollywood?

I actually laughed out loud when I heard this story on CNN the other day. And it wasn’t because it was a good joke.

You may remember when Drescher took a guest turn on “Larry King Live” a few months ago. We talked about it here. She was just as obnoxious and out of place talking about national politics as her nasally voice suggests. I had had enough of her after one segment. She was like those actors who think they can cure diseases because they played doctors on TV: She apparently thinks that she can be a senator because she’s heard her Hollywood counterparts talk about them.

And can I just point out one other thing? If you have to announce your interest in a political opportunity through your publicist, there’s probably something wrong.

If I still haven’t convinced you that Sen. Fran Drescher is a bad idea, I have just one word for you:

Filibuster.

C-SPAN has survived a lot of things since going on the air as a public service. But I’m not sure that even C-SPAN can survive unlimited Drescher audio.
