Think critically about campaign promises you hear

It isn’t that I think Madison County commissioners are overstating their road-funding needs. It’s just that I think there are better ways for them to meet those needs than to hamstring elected officials who are supposed to look out for the interests of the entire state.

But the overall point is that campaign promises come so easily to our candidates. We need to think clearly and critically about what they’re saying—and about what they’re leaving unsaid about those promises.

If they know we’re listening carefully, perhaps they’ll start choosing their words with commensurate care.
