ALABAMA FOOTBALL NOTEBOOK: Tiffin sets kicking record

When Leigh Tiffin kicked through a 40-yard field goal to clinch the win for Alabama, it gave him 348 career points and set a career scoring record at Alabama.

The previous record of 345 points was held by Phillip Doyle (1987-90). Tiffin made three field goals and an extra point Saturday. He now has 76 career field goals, second all-time at Alabama and two shy of the record held by Doyle.
A-Mazing
Sophomore receiver Marquise Maze set a single-game career high for receptions with six, all coming in the first half. His 88 yards receiving also tied his single-game high.
Run, Julio, run
Julio Jones took a short pass and ran for a 73-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter, the longest of his career. His previous long was a 64-yard reception in last year’s SEC Championship Game against Florida. Jones finished Saturday’s game with four catches for 102 yards.
Safety net
When Tide QB Greg McElroy was whistled for intentional grounding while in the grasp of LSU tackle Drake Nevis in the Bama end zone, a safety was the automatic result. It pulled LSU within 10-9 with 5:55 to play in the third quarter. It was the first safety recorded against Alabama since the 2003 season against Ole Miss.
Rare first-half deficit
When Jordan Jefferson hit Deangelo Peterson on a 12-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter for a 7-0 LSU lead, it marked the first time dating back to the FIU game on Sept. 12 that a team has scored a touchdown against Alabama in the first half. It was also the first time Alabama has trailed since FIU held a 14-13 lead in the second quarter of that game. LSU’s 7-3 halftime lead also marked the second time Alabama has trailed at halftime, the first time coming in the season opener when Virginia Tech led 17-16 at intermission.
On the loose
Mark Ingram ran for 144 yards against LSU and now has 1,148 yards with eight touchdowns this season. He’s averaging 127.6 yards per game.
Scott, Jordan out
LSU tailback Charles Scott was injured after being tackled hard following a 34-yard run that put the Tigers on the Alabama 15 late in the third quarter. Before going out, Scott gained 83 yards on 13 carries.
Earlier in the quarter, starting quarterback Jordan Jefferson was hit hard as he went back to pass by freshman Tide linebacker Nico Johnson for a 15-yard loss and didn’t return to the game. Jefferson had passed for 114 yards in completing 10-of-17 with a touchdown.
On the blink
The instant replay option was not available on the first offensive series for both teams. On Alabama’s first play from scrimmage, a pass to Brad Smelley was ruled incomplete, and it appeared the play was under review. However, the official said play was stopped to inform that the instant replay capabilities were not available at the moment. When LSU took over for its second possession of the game, the instant replay capabilities had been re-established.
Peek returns
After sitting out the Tennessee game following an injury to his left knee during pregame warmups, regular starting tight end Colin Peek saw limited action Saturday. He didn’t make a catch in the game.
Breaking a trend
Saturday’s win marked the first time Alabama has beaten LSU at Bryant-Denny Stadium since 1999. The home team in the series is just 6-13 in the past 19 games.
Alabama leads the overall series, 45-23-5.
LSU was 3-0 on the road this season before Saturday’s loss.

Local ties
The only LSU player from Alabama is Josh Williford, who went to Houston Academy. The offensive lineman will be redshirted this season and wasn’t on the Tigers’ travel roster.
What’s next
The Crimson Tide makes the 83-mile journey up Hwy. 82 and plays Mississippi State in Starkville for a 6 p.m. game. Alabama leads the series with State, 72-18-3, including a 32-7 victory last year in Tuscaloosa.

However, Alabama has lost two straight games in Starkville.

The improved Bulldogs (4-5, 2-3 SEC) had their open date on Saturday.
