My five-favorite golf courses

I recently said I’d list my five-favorite golf courses I’ve played, so here we go:

1. Cypress Head, Port Orange, Fla.: Scored my all-time low of 98 there with three-consecutive birdies here to close out the round. Lots of palm trees, water and properly placed brush. Paid $20 for 18 holes. I like that the most. Driving range had lights, so you could practice after sunset.

2. Lake Course, Grand National: Told someone the other day that this place would make Tiger Woods cry. OK, probably not. Beautiful layout, undulated greens and lots of water.

3. North Course, Daytona Beach, Fla., Golf Club: Was the first course I ever played, so it’s got sentimental value. Several tiny lakes and tons of doglegs. The lakes make this course more difficult than it should be. The cost: $18 for 18 holes. Why can’t we get that around here?

4. Links Course, Grand National: First course I ever broke 100. Not sure how I did it, either. I’m sure mulligans were involved. Spectacular finishing hole.

5. Silver Lakes, Glencoe: The most undulated fairways I’ve ever seen. Mountains in the background. Clean air. A slice of heaven, except the course kicks your butt.

I’ve played Auburn Links more than any other course and it’s a dandy to try. But that place has my number. Don’t know why. Never broke 100 there. Auburn Links owes me and I can’t wait to go back there again. Never played 18 at Indian Pines. I should because it looks very inviting. Played 18 at Moore’s Mill a few years ago, but that was a cold, wet windy day so I can’t remember much other than hypothermia. Played in a best ball tournament at Saugahatchee recently, but I was atrocious. Would like to try there again on my own. Never played the AU Club. Maybe one day.

In the future, I’d like to go back to Red Oak in Cusseta, Ga., try Cambrian Ridge in Greenville and Capitol Hill in Montgomery. I’d play Augusta National if the folks there would let me. As it stands, I have a better chance of catching the Bubonic Plague. St. Andrews wouldn’t be bad either.
