Through one quarter, New Mexico State has seemingly outplayed Auburn, but the Tigers still own a 14-7 lead. Auburn has benefited from two big plays—Kodi Burns’ 58-yard touchdown pass to Rod Smith and Pat Sims’ 20-yard fumble recovery.
NMSU outgained the Tigers 161 to 78 in the quarter. The Aggies have a lot of speed and run a lot of underneath crossing routes. AU may be comfortable with waiting for NMSU to make another mistake, then capitalize on it.
Burns has looked good at quarterback and the Tigers would have possession right now if Robert Dunn had not dropped a third down pass. Mario Fannin has not played yet. He hasn’t fumbled either. Auburn has not really tried to establish its running backs, so we’ll see how this goes as the game progresses.

Almost 12 minutes have been played at Jordan-Hare Stadium and Auburn’s offense actually looks worse than it did before. The Tigers’ playbook has consisted of six rushes and two punts with no first downs. However, the Tigers have not turned the ball over.
With the score tied 7-7, New Mexico State has outgained Auburn 106 to 16.
OK, never mind. Kodi Burns just threw a 58-yard touchdown pass to Rod Smith. Forget I said anything. 14-7 Auburn.

Observations from the first Saturday of autumn:
1) My new Sasquatch Sumo2 driver smashes the ball. I couldn’t believe how far I was sending balls off the tee. It’s much better than my old Wal-Mart driver. But I’m not really good enough to own such a club. I feel like a 12-year-old with the keys to a Ferrari.
2) We’re still 20 some-odd minutes from kickoff at Jordan-Hare Stadium, and tonight’s crowd doesn’t look as scant as some would believe. Still, plenty of people have disguised themselves as empty seats. It’s New Mexico State. What do you expect?
3) Florida sure had a scare today. Is Ole Miss really that good, or was Florida suffering from a hangover after last week’s big win over Tennessee?
4) LSU welcomed South Carolina back to reality.
5) The PA man just announced freshman quarterback Kodi Burns as Auburn’s starting QB tonight, earning a loud roar from the crowd.
I’ll check in later.

I don’t understand how a meteorogist in Colorado is supposed to be the foremost expert on predicting the number of hurricanes the Atlantic basin will have each year. We get this doom and gloom forecast of 12 named storms, or whatever, and 8 hurricanes—3 of which may become catastropic.
But it’s become apparent to me that such premature forecasts are worthless. We can use climatalogical (cool word, huh?) data to come up with some estimate of what we think might happen, but it really just boils down to a wild guess. A shot in the dark. Maybe these forecasters should seek the advice of palm readers to help them.
We should never be wrapped up in what someone in Colorado thinks might happen during hurricane season. Instead, we should worry more about issues we know we must face and come up with solutions to solve them. As for hurricanes, the coast should take measures to make itself safer for future storms, if and when they arrive.
This hurricane season hasn’t delivered much of anything to the U.S. so far and that’s a good thing. We’ve still got a few weeks left, and remember that Opal developed in early October of 1995. But at this point, the biggest news hurricane season brought us was a baseless forecast.

Ever hit a hole in one? Me either. Ever seen a hole in one? I’ve missed out on that too. Just imagine making a hole-in-one only to have your shot duplicated by a buddy just seconds later. It happened the other day in New Jersey. Check out the link below to read the story published on the Atlanta Journal-Constitution’s Web site.
