Snow forecast surprises me

Just looked at this weekend’s forecast from the National Weather Service (yeah I’m a weather geek). I was surprised to see a 40 percent chance of snow for Sunday. Frankly, I didn’t see that coming.

Sunday’s high is forecasted for 44. Ouch. Stay inside and watch a movie. If it does snow, I wouldn’t think it would be enough to create a winter wonderland or anything, but you never know.

We are living in a material world ...

I was placed on hold during a phone call to my mortgage company and I’m still chuckling about the song I heard during those few minutes. It was none other than “Material Girl” from Madonna.

Clearly, we are living in a material world, and lending institutions are well aware of this. Come to think of it, living in a material world’s what got us into this economic mess.

Much has been debated regarding President Obama’s economic stimulus plan. Do I think it’s best for America? I’m not qualified to give that answer so there’s no point going there.

But I will say this: it continues to amaze me that conservatives blast the plan and liberals seem to think it’s the greatest thing since sliced bread. Republicans continued to ridicule the president for this “reckless” plan for America. If George W. Bush came up with the idea, what would they say about it then? It would be hailed by the GOP, no doubt, and slammed to the turf by Democrats.

Which brings me to my point. Figuratively, people aren’t slamming or hailing this stimulus plan. Instead, they have simply chosen partisanship and will mindlessly boo or cheer accordingly.

Lack of economic judgment and greed put this nation in the hole financially. Narrow-mindedness isn’t the way to crawl out.

Seems like old times

It’s good to see former high school athletes and know they’re doing well. Such has been the case for me recently.

I bumped into former Smiths Station standout wide receiver Chris Fears last week an elevator at East Alabama Medical Center. No, he wasn’t sick or anything. I think he was just visiting someone. Fears was arguably the most celebrated wide receiver in east Alabama during the early 1990s, with all due respect to Central’s Shedrick Dixon. With I had asked what he’s doing these days, but he seemed to be doing fine.

Tuesday, I chatted with Loachapoka basketball great Anthony Williams, formerly known as Big Ant or Big A. Williams, found doing leg presses at Gold’s Gym, led the Indians to the Class 1A championship in 1996 before taking his academics and basketball skills to Vanderbilt. Today, Williams sells pharmaceutical and medical supplies. He’s living in Montgomery but said he’s about to move to Georgia. Macon, I believe.

I wonder who I’ll run into next week.

All that’s left for this pinewood derby car is adding weights, the decals, wheels/axles, and giving it one final coat of gloss to make it shine. I’ve got a feeling it has a chance to look really good. I have no idea if it will be fast though.
