The city of Opelika will honor and remember military veterans during a Memorial Day service outside the city hall.

The service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at the Veterans’ Memorial Monument, with retired Army Sgt. 1st Class David Dismukes as the guest speaker.

Dismukes served for 17 years in the Army, which included tours in Iraq, Afghanistan and Desert Storm.

Dismukes received a number of awards and decorations, including the combat infantryman’s badge, meritorious service medals and Army achievement medals.

The Opelika Memorial Day service will also include guest singers, Dr. Michael and Kelly Marcades. Dr. Marcades is the director of music at First United Methodist Church in Opelika.

Opelika High School rising senior and member of the marching, jazz and symphonic bands, Matthew Lowman, will be the guest trumpeter at the Memorial Day service.

Matthew’s father served in the Vietnam War.

Photographs taken by Dismukes during his military career as an Army public affairs noncommissioned officer will be on display during the Memorial Day service, according to Opelika Community Relations Specialist Jan Gunter.

The Memorial Day service is open to the public. Opelika City Hall is at 204 S. 7th St.
