Auburn City Council ponders cable option

Auburn residents may soon have a choice when it comes to cable providers.
The city council will consider an ordinance granting Knology of Alabama, Inc., a non-exclusive cable franchise in the city at its meeting tonight.
The city requires cable television companies to obtain a franchise to operate within city limits, as allowed by federal law. Currently, the city has one non-exclusive cable franchise with Charter Communications.
The regular meeting will begin at 7 p.m. in the city council chambers at 141 N. Ross St. The Committee of the Whole will meet at 6:55 p.m. Both meetings are open to the public.
A public hearing on the ordinance is required. One will be held before the council votes.
Other agenda items include:
- An ordinance to put three stop signs and one 25 mph sign in the Donahue Ridge subdivision, and another ordinance to establish a no parking zone at 604 W. Glenn Ave.
- A resolution to remove 41.04 acres of land owned by Mathan and Jill Holt on Alabama Highway 14 from the city limits. A decision on this issue was tabled at the Oct. 20 council meeting.
- A resolution to authorize an assessment for the West Pace Improvement District. The action will allow the district to begin the process of placing assessments on the 165.5 acres of property in the district.

I’m one of the “IDIOTS” who fell for the 2yr lock-in guarantee BS. I knew better. I have always had verbal confrontations with upper management and even go as far as to tell the CSR’s that I want our conversations taped and that I’m also recording on my end. They’re so stupid! As soon as the new competition gets here, I’m cancelling.
addavid is absolutely right….this wounldn’t be happening unless Bill Ham and Philip Dunlap finally arranged some kind of kickback of funds into their own pockets. Those guys look out for themselves first and everyone else later, if at all. I can’t believe a university town like Auburn has two clowns like that in charge of anything down at City Hall. Both are embarrassments, and unethical boneheads who should have been gone long ago. It’s no wonder the City of Auburn is getting it’s butt kicked by Opelika on all fronts. But all is not lost, Ham and Dunlap are making out like bandits. Oh, wait a second….maybe they are…..
I REMEMBER WHEN TV. WAS FREE???? THINGS WERE SO SIMPLE THEN.BUT WILL TRUE COMPETITION COME FROM THIS.THE BASIC CABLE PKG SHOULD INCLUDE MORE PREMIUM CHANNELS,SO YOU DON’T HAVE TO PAY FOR THEM.I NEVER SAW THE LOGIC OF 7 HBO CHANNELS AND ALL OF THOSE MUSIC CHANNELS. I HAVE IPODS,RADIO,CD’S FOR MUSIC BUT SOME FALL FOR IT.MAYBE IT IS A STATUS SYMBOL TO HAVE 7 HBO(WITH RE-RUNS) AND 25 MUSIC CHANNELS… YOU GUESS??
What do the Mayor and Dunlap get out of this? No one does anything in Auburn without a quid pro quo. I love the comment about “Hayleyville” How true. What a blemish on the landscape of the city. Does anyone have a IQ above 100 ? Opelika is eating our lunch.
Thank Goodness! Charter is surely the worst cable company in history.
I hope nobody reading this fell for their BS “contract” pricing lately. They knew this was coming and tried to tie folks down for at least another year.
This is truly a victory for the people of Auburn.
Someone at Knology told me a year ago that they tried to come into Auburn, but the city required them to string cable past every single residence in the city - or do none at all. How unlike what the city is doing with “Hayleyville on the Interstate” where they give away taxes for an “upscale” shopping center - with the only thing being auto dealers - they let him do it in stages.
I read an article in the OANews (I think) a few months back (I think) where Opelika’s mayor was discussing inviting in competition at some point in the not to distant future, maybe once the current contract expired…not sure.
Now we just need this in Opelika. I hate Charter with all my being.
I will sign up for Knology the very second it is available. Charter is pathetic.
I really hope the council gets behind this because Charter needs some competition. I pay more for Cable than so many other people I know and I get less for it. I don’t think I have ever met a fellow Auburn resident that has really been pleased with Charter. Competition is needed in this market for so many reasons!
