Emotions are running high after Auburn native and antiwar activist Matthis Chiroux likened the U.S. Army to the Fourth Reich and accused it of encouraging fear, racism and sexism.
“When you hear somebody compare our military to the Fourth Reich, you kind of realize that this guy isn’t really worth listening to,” said Janine Babbitt, whose husband Maj. Erich Babbitt, an active duty Army National Guard member, has been deployed in Afghanistan for about a week.
Chiroux, who made headlines a year ago when he refused a deployment to Iraq, made his most recent comments during a service at the Auburn Unitarian Universalist Fellowship Sunday.
An Opelika-Auburn News story about the event published Monday has attracted nearly 60 comments as of Wednesday night from people on both sides of the issue.
“It made me feel embarrassed and sad, not only that he’s a representative of Auburn, but that he’s serving with the military and he would have this stand with our military and country,” Babbitt said.
Her husband has been part of the military for the past 15 years, she said.
“This is our first deployment and we have nothing but great things to say about the Army,” she said. “You’re hoping that you are striving for a greater good and a greater cause and to have peace. He (Erich) volunteered because he felt like it was his turn to serve his country.”
Janine points out that America has a volunteer Army, and that it was Matthis Chiroux’s choice to join.
“We’re not drafted in this military, we volunteer to join it,” she said. “This gentleman, Matthis Chiroux, he obviously has the right to say what he wants to say because we live in a free county … We live in a free county because of the men and women who have fought to make it a free country.”
U.S. Army Capt. David Van Horn, an Alabama National Reservist and full time AGR soldier who returned from Iraq last year, and Robert Chiroux, Matthis’ father, are among those who took exception to Chiroux’s statements.
Van Horn said Matthis Chiroux is entitled to say what he wants, that it is a free country, but that being deployed in combat in Iraq is different from deployment as an Army journalist.
Van Horn said his men saw action about every other day in Iraq, and they were going “over the wire” almost every day while deployed.
“What this guy is pitching is the ugly American,” Van Horn said. “He would be pitching this if there was a cold war or a hot war. I would warn strongly against people buying into anything that hasn’t been seen first hand. Until you’ve been there, you’re not going to know.”
Sunday, Matthis said he was taught how to kill by the Army.
Van Horn said every soldier goes through basic training, whether he’s going to be in combat or not.
“Everybody has to have the basic skills to be a rifleman in a pinch,” he said. “He got the standard training everyone gets. If he got overrun he’d know how to shoot a rifle.”
While in Iraq, Van Horn said he and his men did not take part in intimidation tactics with locals. He said they tried to do right by them, including providing Iraqis with medical support, shoes and supplies.
He said having good relationships with Iraqis made his men safer.
“The army is not trying to make criminals out of people. It falls on deaf ears for someone like me who’s been out there and run the road and seen it. American soldiers aren’t built to be terroristic… It’s not who we are as people. My guys are too damn good,” Van Horn said.
Van Horn said what Matthis Chiroux said is “between him and his God and his honor.”
Matthis’ father, Robert Chiroux, Ph.D, is also speaking out. In his talk Sunday, Matthis accused his father of physical and emotional abuse. Robert denies the allegations.
“I will remain silent no longer. I respect free speech and the right to peaceably protest, but I seriously doubt my son’s convictions to the anti-war movement or any other cause except where he can profit from it. I am disappointed with my son and the effect this has had on our family…Our family does not condone Matthis’ rhetoric and would caution anyone who might consider providing him financial assistance,” his father said in a statement provided to the Opelika-Auburn News.
Sunday, Matthis admitted that tangles with law enforcement as a juvenile landed him in jail and subsequently in the Army. Matthis contends he did not a have choice in the matter, but his father said otherwise.
In his statement, Robert Chiroux said, “My days as his custodial parent ended when after yet another infraction Matthis and I met with his probation officer and an army recruiter whom I had invited.
Matthis choices were laid out for him and he did not hesitate in his choice to join the army. He was, in fact, quite glib.”

Although Chiroux certainly has a right to his opinion, it is rather disappointing to hear of any former Service Member who looks so bleakly upon his time in service. I am personally very proud of my own service to our country, state and local community. I am equally proud of every soldier that has served w/ me. It takes an extraordinary person to voluntarily sacrifice of their time and family in the service of others. From the relief efforts following Hurricane Katrina and the Tornado in Enterprise to the deserts of Iraq, I have proudly served w/ men and women (working w/ CPT Van Horn in all 3 instances) who have always shown themselves as tireless professionals. Perhaps young Matthis is simply trying to profit from his 15 minutes of fame or perhaps he is truly misguided in his beliefs. In either case, I encourage you not to trouble yourself w/ his discouraging rhetoric. I thank all of you who have sacrificed of yourself (and family) in the service of Freedom.
May God bless our great nation,

This Punk is a Coward. No other words need be wasted on him!
Proud Daughter, Wife and Mother of US Soldiers
As former military, I am disgusted with you Matthis. You, like me, VOLUNTEERED, for military service. What did you think the U.S. Army was about, camping and walking around the woods all day? I fully believe your Father’s side of this and I also believe that you chose the military over jail for your criminal activities. Now, once again, just as before you joined the military, you choose to shirk your duty and commitment in order to pursue your own selfish interests.
The anti-war movement you have joined is only a means to an end, not the idealistic crusade that you portray to the media. I am sure that many wonder whom is using whom. Maybe it’s a devil’s deal in that you both get what you want. They get another stooge for their political cause and you get the chance to live it up large in that party pad you have in Brooklyn and avoid your commitment to the military.
I, too, was in the IRR after my active duty ended but I knew that if my country called, I would go because I made that commitment when I VOLUNTEERED, just as you VOLUNTEERED. It is a good thing you live in this country because if you lived in a few places I have visited, you would be in a prison somewhere for your anti-revolutionary activities.
Freedom isn’t free Matthis. It is paid for by the blood and sweat and labor of all those who have worn the uniform. You wore it once but perhaps, you were never worthy of it in the beginning. You appear to be nothing more than a self-serving ego-centric opportunist who was never about serving country or community but rather, only yourself. Maybe you do have something in common with Hugo Chavez or the Castro brothers, or even some in Congress who have the same outlook on life as your self-centered universe seems to wobble on your skewed axis of perception.
I do feel empathy for your father and his having an embarrassment for a son like you. If your juvenile record is so scant of any serious offenses, why not release it to the press and show the world that you aren’t a criminal after all. No, you wouldn’t dare expose to the world the ugly truth about you and your criminal delinquency. You run from the truth as fast as you can as well as responsibility, honor, and duty right into the arms of those less honorable who think our country is a terrible evil. Maybe you both deserve each other. Hopefully, you will both get what you truly deserve, one of which is the disdain and contempt of the law-abiding citizenry of our community here in Auburn, AL.
As they say in Arabic, Ma’Asalaamu Alaiykum marfud! Anyone who has served in the sandbox would know the meaning.
I was reading two particular articles in today’s OA News that were a follow up from a Monday July 5 story about an Auburn man’s anti-military statements. I want to address two particular issues regarding that story.
First, The OA News did a fair, non-biased report on this story. Let me be clear, I do not support the statements or actions of Matthis Chiroux; however, this story was news worthy and should have been covered.

Hey beacon,
I live in Beauregard. We could sell tickets to see this event, if little Matthis has the guts to agree. Then we could send the proceeds to the families of REAL heros who’ve paid the ultimate price while little Matthis was pretending to serve.
Mathis Chiroux is simply a good propagandist and fraud. Some people are easily fooled by a headline - and the careful editing out of some of Dr. Chiroux’s comments. I feel for him and the family. Hopefully, somehow, Mathis may learn to become a man and not just a manipulator, but he’s missed some good chances already.
I’ve already written to Senator Sessions and will write to Sen. Shelby. We all should contact our representatives and voice our concern and displeasure that Matthis Chiroux continues to campaign against our military and our nation at the tax-payers expense. We’ve heard from his father, we’ve read/heard his own words.
Matthis Chiroux should be stripped of all funding consequential to his time in the military. He is a charlatan and a traitor.
This “man”, I use this term very loosely ,is skunk and a charleton of the first order! He should be tarred and feathered and horse whipped. As a matter of fact I’ve got five gallons under the house I have no use for. OH,wait a minute yes I do. Matthis bring your chickenbutt on out to Beauregard and lets party.Lets see if the Army taught you to defend yourself.
