Lee County Democrats gave U.S. Congressman Artur Davis a standing ovation — twice — when he urged them at a fundraiser banquet Tuesday night to spread the word.
Davis, who represents western Alabama’s 7th District, has been gaining national attention recently.
He spoke at the Auburn Hotel and Conference Center, emphasizing the importance of voting for local and national Democratic candidates in the upcoming Nov. 4 elections.
“We Alabama Democrats are sometimes an interesting chosen lot,” Davis said. “We’re not a battle ground state… It can be interesting being an Alabama
Democrat.”
He praised them for defending their party affiliation, sometimes when it’s not popular.
“If you are someone who has a little bit of compassion, and you believe that government has a moral obligation to lift up people who are wounded and hurting through no fault of their own, you’ve probably had someone say to you, ‘All you’re doing is wasting taxpayers’ money,’” Davis said. “…The fact that you’re in this room means you don’t believe any of that nonsense.”
Davis encouraged those present to keep working and sharing their beliefs and talk to others about voting Democratic.
“If you take the time to tell them these things, if you take the time to minister about who we are and what we believe, then I assure you, ladies and gentlemen, we will come back to the point… where we can win and compete in this state,” he said.
Davis’ audience interjected his speech with applause and cries of “yeah,” and “that’s right.”
After Davis spoke, people, all smiles, lined up to shake his hand and wish him luck.
Frankie King, mother of Democratic Lee County revenue commissioner candidate Bettye King, said she thought Davis’ message was “energizing.”
“It’s kind of what we needed,” King said.
