CULLMAN - A fired Cullman County sheriff’s deputy has been arrested and charged with stealing $90,000 in confiscated money.

Sheriff Tyler Roden says 39-year-old Mark Wayne Maddox, of Baileyton, was charged Wednesday with theft after he surrendered at the Cullman County Detention Center.

Roden says Maddox worked as the evidence custodian for the sheriff’s office. He was placed on administrative leave on Sept. 26 once the theft probe began and later was fired. The sheriff says the missing $90,000 has not been recovered.

Maddox, a deputy for the last 15 years, had been the evidence custodian for the past 10 years. He was freed on a $10,000 property bond. If convicted, he could be sentenced up to 20 years in prison.
