At the regular Opelika City Council meeting Tuesday, Mayor Gary Fuller announced the pardon of three men previously convicted in city municipal court.

Fuller announced he had fully pardoned Calvin Stringer, Victor Alvis and Donald Paul Jackson Jr.

“All three have repaid their debt to society,” Fuller said.

According to a city document, Stringer was convicted of petty larceny in 1968, Alvis with theft of property in the third degree in 1984, and Jackson with possession of drug paraphernalia in 1995.

State law allows a mayor to grant pardons for people who violate municipal ordinances and are convicted in a municipal court.

In other business, Opelika City Council members voted unanimously to approve a one-time bonus of $1 for every month of service for retired city employees. Fuller said City Controller Mitch Price expected the checks to be provided in December.

The city council also voted unanimously to pay $12,000 to have a structural engineering firm conduct a study to provide recommendations for renovations and upgrades to the Opelika Police Department building.

Why not give the city employees that are working now a raise or a dollar a month.  What happens with the employees of the city with no raises. How do you expect these people to live now.. come on..
