Furlough program ends for Valley

The furlough program for the city of Valley will soon be over.
The city council unanimously agreed Monday night to end the program, effective Nov. 23. Mayor Arnold Leak instituted an executive order Jan. 6 to require employees take unpaid days off.
The recommendation to stop the furlough program came from the city’s finance committee. Council member and finance chair Ray Edwards said the city’s finances have improved enough in recent months, and the committee no longer saw a need to continue the program to conserve money.
“Things are looking better,” he said. “We’ve been watching the finances and the trend is going upward.”
Committee members will continue to watch the city’s monies closely, but Edwards said they didn’t anticipate the need to reinstitute the program in the foreseeable future.
The committee also recommended the city’s official 2009 Thanksgiving holiday would be observed Nov. 26 and 27. The council unanimously agreed. Both days will be paid holidays for city employees.
City offices will be closed Wednesday in observance of Veterans Day. The city’s annual program will be at 11 a.m. EST at Veterans Park.
In other matters, the council agreed to:
n Get a $500,000 loan from Capital City Bank to complete construction on the Fairfax Bypass. Council members Deborah Chambers and Henry Cooper voted against the resolution.
n Allow Dr. Enrique Duprat to lease a room in River View School, and to allow the Valley Historic Preservation Commission to authorize the leasing of such space in historic property without council action.

Brook,

Your final statement was “when is this non-sense going to end”.
First, when and IF the people of Valley Vote OUT ARNOLD LEAK and RAY EDWARDS.
I have said all along the developers should have paid for the roadway improvements…they are the ones who stood to gain the most from the inception. The economy tanking should have been the developers loss…But let not a Lanier lose any money! LOL
Second, has ARNOLD LEAK EVER shown any real concern about the employees of the City of Valley? Not that I can see but with the exception of one JAMES T. BRYAN. I believe there is more to their relationship than work, but I shall not expound on that matter since Bryan is gone!
It’s true, Valley is in debt up to it’s eye balls and it does not look much better for the forseeable future. I think we have just had to learn to live with what we have got until someone with some common sense unseats Leak & Edwards…At least we have a great Police Chief back in Tommy Weldon! That was a milestone to get weldon back and Tim Bryan be out of his way to do his job!

I think it a shame when the City Of Valley spent that much money on the Fairfax Bypass and Fob James Drive and layed Off 8 workers and 2 part time workers or did they bring back the part time workers without hiring back the full time workers or maybe they hire someone who was doing Coummity Service and put him over the grass crew and there are a few more things that will come out later about The Valley City Concil and Public Works !

But don’t you think the new shrubberies look nice? And what about all those brand new businesses that are crowding all the available space they graded out? Come to think of it, the shrubberies ARE the only new things out there, except for the traffic lights which some fool has now set up in a way to make sure everyone now has to wait at the light.

I would like to know since the furlough program is over is the city going to rehire or call back any of the 8 people they layed off ? Who take a lay off that same week the furlough program started!

This is so crazy the Valley already has to pay back a 11 million dollar loan for the construction work on Fob James drive and Fairfax bypass. We already taxed to death thanks to a bunch of morons running our city. They can’t pay for what they already owe and yet want to borrow more money. When is this nonsense going to end.
