Heartbreaker
Cliff Williams | Opelika-Auburn News
Members of the Opelika baseball team react after losing to Hoover in the state championship series Saturday at Paterson Field.
MONTGOMERY - Two outs.
That’s all that separated Opelika from its first ever Class 6A state baseball title.
But it proved to be the most painful two outs in the lives of every Bulldog player, fan and coach.
After suffering a 12-4 loss to Hoover in the day’s first game, it seemed Opelika had the deciding Game 3 sewn up with a four-run lead heading to the top of the seventh.
But Hoover’s bats caught fire and the Buccaneers scored five runs to take the lead, and held off Opelika in the bottom of the seventh to snatch the title from the Bulldogs’ grasp, 7-6.
Opelika ends its season with an impressive 42-4 record, but went 1-2 in Montgomery.
