If the 118 voters in a mock election at Auburn University Tuesday had the power to decide the election, Republican nominee John McCain would be the next president.
McCain took 62 votes, compared to Democrat Barack Obama’s 45. Lesser candidates split the rest.
The voting came after students piled into an auditorium in the Lowder Business Building to hear state Democratic Chairman Joe Turnham and Republican Chairman Mike Hubbard discuss the issues and to test a state-of-the-art voting system.
The Prime III voting system was developed at Auburn by Juan Gilbert. He hopes it will be used widely in the 2010 election.
It is a “one-stop” voting system that anyone, regardless of disability, can use, Gilbert said.
His system uses video to help eliminate voting mistakes and fraud, he said.
Both Turnham and Hubbard said the voting machines were interesting.
“I like some of the features of it,” Turnham said. “I’m especially concerned systems are not complex.”
He said he is confident heading into the Nov. 4 election.
“I like where the Democrats are nationally,” he said.
Hubbard was also interested in the technology.
“I think it’s interesting,” he said. “I think we need to look at new and innovative ways of doing things.”
Hubbard was confidant about Alabama voting Republican, but worried about the national election.
“I think that Americans are going to make a very important decision in the way our country heads,” he said. He said he was concerned about Democrats controlling both the White House and Congress.
“It’s very sobering,” he said.

History repeats itself. The older you get, the more you realize how true this statement is. But no one would have ever thought the history of other countries could be repeated here in the United States. The American people need to think of these past leaders and what they accomplished. Saddam Hussein, Adolf Hitler, Joseph Stalin, Vladimir Lenin, Fidel Castro. These men took over countries by their smooth talking and promises of “change” and a utopia life style. By the time the people realized what was happening it was TOO LATE! How can any American, all of whom have a family member who gave a part of their life in service or the ultimate price—their life—for what America was founded on…a DEMOCRACY! Why do you think people of other countries come to the United States?...because of our DEMOCRACY and our freedoms! How can any American vote to put a man in the office of President of the United States with the inexperience, the background, friends and associates as the Democratic Party nominee? He is making promises that cannot be delivered and plans that will not work without destroying the FREE ENTERPRISE system that makes America what it is. WAKE UP AMERICA! There is no such thing as a utopia life on this earth, but there is a democracy, don’t throw away our country and our freedoms paid for with the blood of our ancestors! McCain/Palin 2008!!
!!!Unfortunately!!! it doesn’t reflect the real, world only about 9% of the students at AU are black. This is an election based on race, and income. It’s a fact that lower income, and African American families support Obama. College students at AU as well as college students in general tend to come from wealthier families and therefore support McCain.
Clinton won with the same strategy…play on the fears and hardships of the poor
Actually, it does reflect real world polling statistics. It reflects the political views of a very Republican state even when college campuses tend to vote overwhelmingly for the Democratic candidate.
McCain/Palin 08
Thank goodness this doesn’t reflect real world polling stats.
