Military voting bill expected to speed up process

MONTGOMERY — A bill that has passed Congress and been signed by President Barack Obama would streamline the process for military personnel overseas to cast ballots in Alabama elections.

The Military and Overseas Voter Empowerment Act requires that military voters in federal elections be allowed to order and receive ballots by e-mail, fax or other electronic means. Alabama military voters must now use the U.S. Mail to order and receive election ballots.

The director of the Help America Vote program in the Alabama Secretary of State’s Office, Adam Thompson, said the legislation would cut by 50 percent the amount of time it takes military personnel to order and cast ballots in federal elections.

The bill passed Congress last week and was signed by Obama Wednesday.
