A tractor-trailer was struck by a westbound train traveling from Auburn to Loachapoka at a crossing on Lee Road 61 Tuesday morning, ripping the trailer in two.
The accident, which took place along Highway 14 in Auburn, occurred as the driver of the 18-wheeler made a left turn onto Lee Road 61 and the tractor-trailer’s landing gear became hung up on the railroad tracks, according to Alabama Department of Public Safety Trooper Edward Ryan.
“As the landing gear of the truck’s trailer became stuck, it caused it to lose traction with the road’s surface,” Ryan added.
At the time of the accident the truck was only hauling a small amount of bleach, Ryan said.
No injuries were reported in the incident. The tractor-trailer involved in the accident belonged to the Dade Paper & bag Company, a Florida-based paper and packaging supply business.
As a precaution, a City of Auburn Hazardous Materials Unit was on hand. The Southwest Fire Department also responded to the accident that blocked Lee Road 61 for approximately four hours.
“It was a really simple accident,” said Ryan. “Drivers sometimes don’t realize that there’s a drop in the road until they try to cross those tracks and get stuck.”
Alabama Department of Public Safety Lt. James Patterson is grateful no one was injured in Tuesday morning’s accident, but knows things could’ve easily been much worse and urges the public to exercise caution at railroad crossings.
“If your vehicle gets hung up on railroad tracks, get out, get away from the vehicle and notify the authorities as soon as possible,” said Patterson. “You’re not going to win a battle with a train.”
