AU organizations raise more than $9,000 for earthquake victims
The Auburn University Chinese Professional Association (AUCPA) and the AU Chinese Students and Scholars Organization (CSO) raised $9,105 last weekend for victims of China’s recent 8.0 magnitude earthquake. The money will be transferred to the China Red Cross to help the earthquake victims in desperate need.

Proponents of removing the state sales tax on groceries lacked the votes to pass the proposal on the Legislature’s final meeting day Monday. State Rep. John Knight, D-Montgomery, and Sen. Hank Sanders, D-Selma, scrambled for support in the Senate, but Senate Rules Committee Chairman Lowell Barron, D-Fyffe, didn’t put the bill on the Senate’s first work agenda Monday. Asked if the bill were dead, Barron said, “I’d say it is.”

The Alabama Senate was in danger Monday night of ending its 2008 legislative session without approving a state education budget to operate schools in the fall. The Senate was divided into two factions: one led by Senate budget committee Chairman Hank Sanders that wanted to hold the line on spending and another that wanted to add $25 million to the budget for universities.

Friday morning robbery reported in Opelika
A morning robbery was reported Friday at a residence in the 1300 block of Shannon Court in Opelika. Two suspects robbed the victim of $50 in currency and a white, hoodie jacket at 10 a.m. Friday, Opelika police Capt. Allan Elkins said. No weapon was used in the incident, Elkins said.
Ride of Silence starts from Lee County Courthouse Wednesday
Cyclists around the country will take to the roads in a silent procession Wednesday to honor cyclists who have been killed or injured while riding on public roadways.
Locally, the Ride of Silence will start at 7 p.m. from the Lee County Courthouse, and will last approximately eight miles.

Forecasters see weak economy even if housing, credit improve
A growing number of economists believe the country is on the brink of a recession or in one already, dragged down by all the problems in housing, credit and financial markets. Now 56 percent of the economists think the economy has started or will enter a recession this year. That’s up from 45 percent in a survey in February. If there is a recession, it probably will be short and shallow, economists said.
