Corporate spelling bee raises money for good cause

Local organizations gathered Friday to raise money for the Lee County Literacy Coalition (LCLC) and to test their spelling skills in the fifth annual Public Relations Council of Alabama (PRCA) Corporate Spelling Bee at Lee-Scott Academy.

Spurrier, Gamecocks on tap at SEC

South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier gets his say at the Southeastern Conference preseason football meetings.Spurrier and two Gamecocks, receiver Kenny McKinley and linebacker Jasper Brinkley, will talk about the upcoming season to SEC media on Friday. But Spurrier is likely to be more reserved than he was a year ago. In 2007, Spurrier said he thought the Gamecocks were ready to challenge for an SEC title.

South Texas begins cleanup after Dolly

Business at reopened restaurants was humming, grocery store parking lots were packed and residents of south Texas were venturing out on the newly dry roads again as the remnants of Hurricane Dolly moved well away from the Rio Grande Valley. But thousands were still without power Thursday and cleanup was ongoing following the Category 2 storm. Officials also warned that Dolly’s aftereffects were not necessarily gone for good.

Drought condition worsen across state

Alabama’s drought status has not improved, in fact, its getting worse. According to the U.S. Drought Monitor Survey, only 6 percent of the state is not being affected by some stage of drought. The worst areas are across northeast Alabama where D-2, or severe drought conditions, exist over 36 percent of the state.

It was a hot lead for detectives on a cold case. People suddenly were getting salmonella at a Minnesota restaurant more than 1,000 miles from the center of the nation’s outbreak.After tracing credit card receipts — to find what the restaurant’s healthy customers didn’t eat — there was good evidence that the jalapenos were sickening people. This gave officials a way of tracing the pepper shipments all the way back to three farms in Mexico.
