Barbara Patton: Busy weekend was productive weekend
Football games, ribbon cuttings, dedications, political fund-raisers, high school plays, Sunday school, church, and those in-between activities. It all adds up to one very busy weekend. Thank goodness, I was just in attendance and didn’t have to do any of the work. Many did and I know they slept soundly on Sunday night.

Barbara Patton: Miracle Field, “Les Miserables” highlight weekend
If you think everything in Opelika was rained out this past weekend, think again. True – Garden in the Park and the Two by Two Unity Run were cancelled, but the Lions Club had their pancake breakfast and it was a huge success.

Barbara Patton: City of Opelika is blessed this Christmas
The season of giving is here — the Christmas season! If you are a Christian, as I am, you are celebrating the most precious gift of all — the birth of Jesus Christ — and the words of Jesus ring true more than ever, “It is more blessed to give than to receive.”

Barbara Patton: City becomes hotspot for orchestras
Has it really been over 20 years since the Opelika Arts Association – now the Arts Association of East Alabama – began the Performance Series? After hearing the Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra this week – a performance, by the way that was more than wonderful — I wonder if we realize how blessed we are to have opportunities such as this to experience.

Barbara Patton: Responsibility is character trait of month
I was really too tired to write this column. When it came right down to it, I just didn’t want to write it at all, but I had said that I would. That meant that it was my responsibility to follow through.

Barbara Patton: No reason for voters not to turn out
As Americans, we all believe in the right to vote. But how often do we exercise that right? An e-mail I recently received caused me to go and look at the number of people that voted in the August 2008 Opelika mayoral and council election and then compare those numbers to the ones in 1996.

Barbara Patton: Darden house full history
Dr. J. W. Darden’s legacy is living on through the restoration of the home where he and his wife lived and where he practiced medicine. The restoration of this house on Auburn Street in Opelika was relentlessly pursued by Dr. Yvonne Brown-Phillips, as she led the efforts and formed many partnerships to make this house come back to life. It was not an easy task but through her, their legacy was preserved.

Barbara Patton: Integrity takes on more than one meaning
I’ll bet if I asked you about the word “integrity,” you would be able to easily tell me about it. Right? That’s what I thought until I started to write this column on the Character Word of the Month. I have struggled and gone in all kinds of directions.
