Joe Turnham: Republican party proven to be tenacious
Believe it; or not, I have looked forward to writing about today’s topic. My life as a volunteer leader of Alabama’s Democratic Party embroils me daily in partisan endeavors and conflict.
I am a proud Democrat and appreciate the history and principles of our party and work daily to further our good causes.

Joe Turnham: Democratic party represents true diversity in state
Politicians, candidates and elections come, and they go; but, political parties remain the fluid institutions that are historically called on to foster democracy, provide electoral choices, propose public policies and facilitate meaningful dialogue about our collective civic future.

Joe Turnham: We should all resolve to do our part to secure freedom
In 1943 the American artistic icon, Norman Rockwell, painted The Human Freedom Series. Rockwell’s four famous paintings portrayed America and her freedoms: Freedom of Speech; Freedom of Worship; Freedom from Want; and Freedom from Fear. Joe Turnham: America still a beacon of hope to a weary world
The kindness and civility exemplified by the 1.5 million people (comparable to all of South Alabama packing the expanded campus-wide tailgating area of an Auburn football game) this past week for the inaugural of a new President and Vice-President inspired me to renewed and greater hope for my country.

Joe Turnham: Four percent sales tax on groceries should be removed
Alabama Democratic Legislative leaders recently declared that a top priority in the 2009 Regular Session will be the elimination of the 4 percent state sales tax on food. This same measure passed the House in 2008 and made it to the Senate floor for final passage only to be high jacked by contract lobbyists and die from a lack of Republican support.

Joe Turnham: Obama has edge for number of reasons
Our country faces tremendous obstacles today. Obstacles that, only several years ago seemed unimaginable, are now a reality for millions of Americans. Our choice for president must reflect considerations of a leader’s raw and unique talents, in addition to their policy platforms.

Joe Turnham: Segall ready to clean the mess
The Third Congressional District of Alabama is a large land swath that runs from Cherokee County down to the Pike County line. From the foothills of the Appalachians to the edge of the Wiregrass, the people that live in this congressional district are a microcosm of our state. I know many of them personally and have traveled nearly every county road in the boundaries of the 13 counties that comprise this district.

Joe Turnham: Chance to nominate president an awesome obligation
No experience or responsibility as party chairman can compare with the awesome obligation to coordinate a state’s participation in selecting a nominee for the Presidency of the United States.

Joe Turnham: 2008 session not all bad
When you look for the worst in something, you usually find it. Public angst with the Alabama Legislature’s high profile failures in 2008 is understood. However, on this patriotic weekend, I want to share with you some positive successes the Alabama Legislature had in the 2008 session. Even amid the disappointments of 2008, many members worked diligently and crossed party lines to enact positive and meaningful legislation.
