Letters: Teachers not the reason for students’ failures, homes are

Having been an educator since 1972, I have seen a variety of gimmicky quick-fix programs come and go.

Letter: Hobbit article bases findings on theory, not scientific fact

The article “Hobbit Challenges Theory of Evolution” in Sunday’s Opelika-Auburn News is another attempt by fallen man to prop up a theory that is unprovable.

Letter: Isn’t playing the stock market a lot like gambling?

Along about this timeframe two years ago, I gambled away around $20,000. The amount I lost was trivial compared to the losses some people I know had. The casino that took my money seems to be an off-limits subject to most moralists who harbor the blanket policy of, “I’m against gambling.“

Letter to the editor: Evidence about homosexuality and promiscuity right here

Claire Wilson asked for evidence for claims I made about homosexuality in arguing that the military should not be used for a sex experiment. I appreciate Wilson’s interest because that evidence is rarely cited by the liberal media.

Letter: Headline on homo floresiensis misleading in newspaper

Sunday’s article on Homo floresiensis was given a very misleading headline, saying that the find “challenges the theory of evolution.”

Letter: Who gains, loses money if Sweet Home Alabama bill passes?

A lot of money has been spent on radio, TV and newspaper ads promoting the Sweet Home Alabama bill. It seems to reason the owners of these businesses have a lot to lose if it fails and a lot to gain if it passes.

Letters to the editor: Letter writer should provide evidence to back claims

I am writing in response to the recent letter by Bruce Murray about repealing Don’t Ask/Don’t Tell.

Letters: Howard family expresses gratitude for respect shown

The Howard family would like to extend great appreciation and gratitude to the Opelika-Auburn News for the nice article published on the late Robert Lewis Howard.

Letter: Mental health should be as important as physical health

As a mental health professional in the community, the recent violence in Huntsville and Austin, Texas, leaves me with observations I would like to share.

Letter: Politically-motivated loons highjack Green Movement

Yesterday in the drug store I overheard someone mention green movement and green gas. At first I was appalled, thinking that the person was talking about an intestinal problem resulting from bad organic food. I finally figured out that is was just more green talk about carbon reductions and ethanol.

Letters: Treese best candidate to succeed Abbett as Lee County DA

For more than 35 years the citizens of Lee County have been honorably served by Nick Abbett in one law enforcement capacity or another. He has served as the chief of detectives of the Opelika Police Department, as an investigator for the former district attorney, as the chief assistant district attorney, and, for the last 11 years, as our district attorney.

Letter: Honest government cannot come without honest elections

If Representative Gerald Allen’s photo ID bill, HB227, isn’t passed by our legislature to help prevent some of the voter fraud that takes place in Alabama we can’t hope for honest elections, and without honest elections we can’t hope for honest government.

Letters: Seems like gambling is chief revenue source for politicians

From reading the news, it seems that the gambling issue has been the biggest source of revenue for our Montgomery politicians in some time.

Letters: There are myriad of concerns with gambling bills, raids

I am continually amazed that intelligent, well-informed and hopefully well-intentioned politicians make the decisions they do.

Letter to the editor: Valentine’s Sweetheart Dance a hit at Opelika Sportsplex

We would like to make a comment about the recent Valentine’s Sweetheart Dance that the Opelika Sportsplex hosted for the middle-school youth of Opelika.

Letters: Valentine’s Day marked landmark anniversary for women

Feb. 14 was more than a day of love and chocolates.

Letter: Youth remain targets of tobacco industry —smokeless or not

We finally have some encouraging news in Alabama when it comes to teen tobacco use. The number of high school smokers at 22.1 percent is an all-time low, but there are still 12,400 kids under 18 who become new daily smokers each year. And offsetting this positive trend is an increase in the use of smokeless tobacco products, including snuff, dip, chew and the new “snus” products.

Letter: Why does Smiths Station High get help and Loachapoka does not?

I read in the Feb. 7 paper that Loachapoka Elementary School received a facelift by the Auburn University employees and Hibbetts Sports employees. Let me first say that this is great that the school was chosen out a submission of three others.

Letter: Governor wrong to displace workers at VictoryLand

I hope the Opelika-Auburn News received letters supporting the observations of Mary Alice Law of Notasulga about gambling in her letter of Feb. 7.

Letter: Alabama has more pressing needs than changing state song

It was with some amusement that I read the Feb. 8 story on Rep. Morrow’s efforts to change the state song of Alabama.

February 11, 2010

Letters: Gambling should be voted upon by the people of Alabama

Once again Alabama has been given a national black eye by our lame duck governor and his fight against the gambling bosses as they fight like two five-year-olds in the sandbox to see who will control the shovel and bucket. Riley and Tyson are being referred to on call in shows, letters in newspapers and on the Internet as “Bingo Bob” and “Buford Pusser Tyson.”

Letters: Prayer event sets city’s tone for statewide celebration

The city of Auburn held a kickoff event to commence its participation in the statewide “Year of Alabama: Small Towns and Downtowns.”

Letters to the editor: Politicians too busy bashing one another to help constituents

It is so disheartening to see one political party denigrate the other party. Meanwhile, there are millions without jobs, health insurance or the wherewithal to feed their families.

Letters: Basketball teams, officials should show more respect to flag

On Jan. 28 the Auburn University men’s basketball team hosted Ole Miss in a game it should have won ... but didn’t.

Letter: Lee-Scott girls JV basketball team deserves recognition

The junior varsity girls basketball team from Lee-Scott Academy just finished a record season Friday with 17 wins and no losses, earning the JV state championship in January.

Letters to the editor: God did not send us to judge others, but find Him in others

Every day I thank God for Jim Evans. He is the highlight of the Opelika-Auburn News. People are always welcomed to respond and today is my turn.

Letters to the editor: Bingo machine profits should not be taxed in Alabama

Bingo machines are addictive; they are like the crack cocaine of gambling. I have visited Las Vegas and seen people lined up to four-to-six machines putting money in and pulling the handles one after another.

Letter to the editor: Citizens should support bill for moratorium on death sentence

I appreciate your editorial reprint this week, “It is time moratorium put on death sentence.” It greatly disturbed me last week to read the U.S. Supreme Court 7 to 2 ruling (Holly Wood v. Allen No. 08-9156). The ruling upheld the death sentence of Woods, who reportedly has an IQ of less than 70.

Letters to the editor: Is lying, cheating and stealing the new American way?

Texting and driving: Wednesday’s newspaper declares that the Alabama House has passed a good bill by a 90 to 3 margin. The bill would make texting while driving illegal.

Letter to the editor: Hard to believe that people were once considered to be property

One hundred and fifty-two years ago the Federal Supreme Court claimed the right to declare who among us are fully human and who are not. As a result, a slave by the name of Dred Scott was determined to have no constitutional rights because the court said he was not a person, but property.
