Letter: Richland Elementary deserves praise for veterans tribute
Last week, my daughter, her classmates, and the staff at Richland Elementary put on a wonderful tribute to honor our veterans on Veterans Day. The tribute was so very heartfelt, honoring, and respectful of our brave men and women who are serving and who have served in our country’s armed forces.

Letter: Wall Street Journal story distorted views on dating in South
On Friday, there was an article about the “Southern Dating Game” in the Wall Street Journal. Although we at Auburn were honored to be mentioned in such a prestigious newspaper, I don’t believe the article portrayed the true reasons for our southern traditions.

Letters: Media do not reveal all sides of teacher health insurance debate
You continue to include coverage of Alabama Education Superintendent Joe Morton’s ‘plan’ to penalize education employees in an attempt to create new funding for Alabama’s public schools. You also continue to run guest editorials from around the state in support of Dr. Morton’s ridiculous plan.

Letters: War will be won or lost depending on view of people
As a former World War II infantryman and prisoner of war, there are several things about the war in Afghanistan that concern me.

Letter: Tell your leaders to act to repeal Medicare’s growth rate
Lost in all the fervor concerning health care reform legislation is one fact crucial to all Americans who are, or soon will be, enrolled in Medicare: Unless Congress acts before the end of the year, payments to physicians will be reduced by 21 percent. Otherwise, come January your doctor will receive from Medicare $79 instead of the $100 he or she now receives.
Letters: Let’s not overreact to fears of global warming
In her letter, Charlotte Ward points to an e-news announcement that global temperature trend is still upward, in opposition to Floy Lilley’s column recognizing that we are in a cooling trend. Both are correct; since the “little ice age” (1850 AD to now) temperatures have been going up, however, before that, the earth had undergone a “medieval warming period” (1000 AD to 1350 AD).
Letters: People need to realize entertainment options in town
Thank you for the excellent arts tabloid that you published last week. We need to be reminded that folks who live in this “cow college town” have many opportunities to be entertained and stretched intellectually by means of the arts.

Government has power to give, and power to take away
While sitting on my porch swing enjoying the cool weather, I was interrupted by a call from Americans for Democratic Action encouraging me to tell my congressman “who is a puppet of the rich, big business CEOs” to vote for comprehensive health care.

Letter: America should treat its veterans better than it has
I am a veteran like many others who served in the Korean Police Action from 1951 to 1953. I was lucky to come home alive after serving in combat conditions for 16 months and two winters, and I did not go ice skating or skiing.

Letters: Contributions to Clothe-A-Child still being accepted
We would like to thank the friends of Lee County for their support of the Clothe-A-Child for School Project. It has been a great success this year. Many generous people have donated a great deal of money for this project.

Letter: We can’t solve global warming if we don’t acknowledge it
In her Tuesday column, Floy Lilley proposes that instead of global warming, there is now a cooling trend. On the same day, the American Scientist E-News directed attention to an independent study by the Associated Press wherein four independent statisticians analyzed recent climate data and found that, small fluctuations notwithstanding, the global temperature trend is still upward.

Letter to the editor: Voters can have impact on Legislature if they try
In April of 2005, I spoke before a committee of the Alabama House of Representatives in favor of a bill that, if passed, would have helped restore trust in our Legislature, saying, in part:

Letter: America hated because it favors Israel, not Palestinians
A few days ago the United States characterized as unfair the United Nations committee report concerning the disproportionate Israeli force against the Palestinians in the Gaza Strip. America has always stood by Israel and justifiably so.

Letter to the editor: EAMC, Bethany House prove how much they care about patients
Several weeks ago, my mother called in a panic as my father was no longer able to walk or speak. When I arrived at their home, I immediately called 911 and within minutes, an ambulance was at the door.

Letter to editor: Hard to understand why Rogers dislikes health care reform bill
In his comments in the Saturday issue of the Opelika-Auburn News, U.S. Congressman Mike Rogers seems to see nothing good in the health care reform bill now debated by Congress.
Yet, as I understand it, the healthcare reform bill will:

Jule Collins Smith Museum deserves accolades, not criticism
Having attending the Jule Collins Smith Museum’s sixth anniversary celebration, I was very saddened to see the Oct. 15 letter to the editor criticizing the museum’s celebration.
When there are so many serious problems in the world, it seems such a waste to be negative about an institution and its people who work so hard to provide wonderful art exhibits and public programming.

Letter: It’s time citizens bring this nation back where it should be
The approaching election offers us another opportunity to put “we the people” back in our government. With every session of Congress, committees, town hall meetings and shady backroom dealings, our leaders’ underlining objective has been to solidify their positions and enhance their powers. Our rights are in freefall.

Letter: Hubbard looking out for the rich, not majority of citizens
Your coverage of Rep. Mike Hubbard’s remarks to the Rotary Club quotes him as saying, “We’re not opposed to removing the sales tax on food, but we are opposed to shifting the burden.”
We do not know if he elaborated on what that burden shift would be, but your readers probably already know that the shift would be away from those in the lower- and middle-income levels carrying the heaviest tax load to the most well off paying a larger share.

Letters to the editor: As Americans, we’ve really been living in a fool’s paradise
Neal Gabler, a writer for the Boston Globe, recently wrote an article entitled, “One Nation, Under Illusion” eloquently describing how we Americans “cut our nose off in spite of our face” with our arrogance, self-centeredness, self-righteousness and boasting. It is good to have pride in people and country, but as Gabler says, “the incessant trumpeting of our national superiority to every other country in the world is more than just off-putting and insulting ... It is infantile.”
Opelika police deserve much appreciation for professionalism
We want to express our sincere appreciation for the excellent response that our family received Aug. 3 from the Opelika Police Department during a crisis intervention. The policemen and policewomen handled themselves professionally and exhibited patience in their difficult task.

Editorial: Race for Family Court Judge worth watching
Alabama’s gubernatorial election may steal next year’s election headlines. Congressional and State Legislature races won’t be too far behind, not to mention the race for attorney general.

Article in newspaper paints unfair picture of Christopher Columbus
As an educator, I typically read news items about the classroom with unease and the AP article about modern viewpoints of Christopher Columbus (Oct. 12) only reinforced my apprehension. No serious student of history truly believes that Columbus discovered the Americas, but that’s not even the point about Columbus.

Letter: Jesus’ reference to leadership wasn’t about medical care
Jim Evans writes, “Jesus’ insight about to whom much is given much is required, applies to every resource on this planet, from corn to penicillin.” By quoting Jesus out of context, Evans enlists him as a drum major for a government monopoly on health care.
