Letters to the editor: Preserve in Auburn in need of support from community
The Auburn City Council recently met at the Louise Kreher Forest Ecology Preserve, which is in serious need of funding for staff and infrastructure. As a member and a supporter, I want to urge the council to support this valuable asset.
Letter to editor: If system hadn’t failed, deputy would still be with us
We buried 4346 on Tuesday. I am referring to Deputy James W. Anderson of the Lee County Sheriff’s Office. The number 4346 was his radio call sign. James was struck and killed in the line of duty on a not so routine traffic stop. He leaves behind a wife of more than 20 years, Corinna, a proud Marine son and a college student daughter.

Letter to editor: People in Auburn took local family under its wing
This past week, when one of their students, 8-year-old Yuli Ruelas passed away suddenly, the Richland Elementary staff and parents mobilized quickly to help the grieving family.

Letter: Churches led by homosexuals send wrong message
Jim Evans is right: The tornado that blew the steeple off the Minneapolis church where Evangelical Lutherans were deciding to ordain practicing homosexuals was a chance event and not a miraculous message from God.

Letter to editor: Rep. Rogers did masterful job at town hall meeting in Auburn
I attended the town hall meeting held by Mike Rogers on Sept. 2 and have been dismayed by the accounts of that meeting by the reporter who attended and from subsequent letters to the editor.
The meeting was spirited and passionate. Individuals from all perspectives were there to listen, to ask questions, and some were there to make their feelings known to the congressman.

Letter to the editor: Polarization hurtful to betterment of America
I wish A.J. Jones had pulled up along my car and asked me my thoughts on President Obama. I would have told him I was happy to have a thoughtful, intelligent and caring man in charge of our country, and that I am happy that the financial abyss we were on the brink of is receding.
Letter: Columnist wrong about Jesus’ ministry and health care plan
Jim Evans is “tired of religious naysayers posing as spokespersons for Jesus.”
Letter to editor: Time for county maintenance to cut grass on county roads
If you’ve driven down any country road lately, you’ll notice a common theme – six-foot high grass and weeds. Where is our county maintenance department?

Letter: There’s not enough room to list Obama’s poor associations
Pulling into a local restaurant the other day, I shook my head at the “Obama 08” sticker prominently displayed on the car parked beside me.

Letters: Degree in common sense surpasses college degree
A while back, a person I know told me success was measured by wealth, fame, position and power. I thought about it for a good while. I remember when was 18 I longed for all the above.
I entered college, but graduated from the University of Life. At the University of Life, I did not earn a degree, but did learn life is not fair; people are not always honest; and whining achieves nothing. I also learned that a framed degree on the wall does not equal to a frame encompassing common sense.

Letters to the editor: Blaming Rogers for the events at town hall meeting unfair
I, too, was at Mike Rogers town hall meeting. To blame Congressman Rogers for “his lack of leadership” is totally unfair. He finished his question and answer session before the “fisticuffs” started. The meeting was not given over to violent language and then violence. Congressman Rogers talked about his pros and cons of government healthcare and other important subjects.

Letters: Rogers showed lack of leadership at town hall meeting in Auburn
Congratulations to the Opelika Chamber of Commerce for its informative and helpful presentation on health care. The two presenters were from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and the Business Council of Alabama, two organizations not noted for their liberalism or their advocacy of bigger government.

Letters to the editor: Terrorists hijacked Islam to suit own misguided purposes
Contrary to a letter to the editor in the Sept. 7 Opelika-Auburn News I thought that it was fantastic of President Obama to call Islam “a great religion.”

Letter to editor: Facing infinite demand, health care would have to be rationed
Charlotte Ward wrote, “We have a moral obligation to provide health care to all citizens, and if we want to be Christ-like about it, to the ‘sojourner within our gates.’”
If it is our moral obligation, why does Ward want to slough off her responsibility on government?

Letters to the editor: End of life choice too sacred for government to make
As a former hospice nurse, I can attest to the importance of a living will and a will. It is important for everyone to talk with family and let their end of life wishes known. It is a decision between spiritual advisor, family and doctor — not the federal government. This is too sacred a decision for a mandate from the government or an official of the government.

Letter to the editor: What exactly are our interests in nations overseas?
In a recent letter, Sam Nichols stated that Social Security and Medicare “have been great for two or three generations of Americans; for our children, however, they are an utter disaster, suffocating them in debt.”

Letter to editor: Congressman could have handled town hall mess in better manner
I was sorely disappointed in the way Congressman Mike Rogers handled the town meeting on health care. His lack of leadership led to chaos, and ultimately fisticuffs.

Letter to the editor: Health care could be improved by repealing laws, not making them
In last Thursday’s issue of the Opelika-Auburn News, it was reported that medicine developer Pfizer was fined $2.6 billion for illegally promoting its medicines to doctors.

Letter to editor: America has moral obligation to provide health care to all citizens
Representative Mike Rogers conducted himself in a gentlemanly fashion at his health care meeting last Wednesday, despite the heated response of some attendees.

Alcohol-impaired driving is no accident and can be prevented
The Alabama State Highway Safety Offices are joining forces with law enforcement officers across the country to take part in the national “Drunk Driving. Over the Limit. Under Arrest” crackdown on impaired driving during the Labor Day holiday period. The crackdown, which runs through Monday, includes sobriety checkpoints and saturation patrols, as well as a $13 million national media campaign supplemented by state-funded advertising.

Letter to editor: More victims at greyhound tracks than defeated gamblers
I am writing in response to the editorial “Casino gambling isn’t best for citizens of Alabama.”

Letter to the editor: When in power, GOP did nothing to reform health care
Amidst the blizzard of right-wing lies, misinformation, and scare tactics about health care, we can nevertheless see clearly if we will only remember the history of the last 75 years.
Letters to the editor: Tort reform against malpractice would reduce health costs
Auburn High School’s own Robert Gibbs says that Republicans have no plans for reducing health care costs. Here is one Republican’s plan for reducing the cost of health care in America.
Letter to editor: Dependency on gov’t entitlements is contradictory to liberty, freedom
Unlike D.W. St. John, I don’t recall how “the right wing denounced it as socialism, communism, loss of freedom” when FDR “championed the creation of Social Security.” But I know this for sure: Although Social Security has been a short-run boon to many people, it’s an unsustainable Ponzi scheme that makes Bernie Madoff look like a piker.

Letter: Evans should listen to his opponents, not silence them
Looks like Jim Evans (“Fear and shouting in the heartland,” Aug. 22) is pretty angry that the actual opposition is speaking out as concerns the president’s plan for so-called health insurance reform.

Remain on lookout for shady businesses who prey on elderly
This is in reference to the article published Aug. 18 regarding the possible donation scam. There are many scams being committed every day, especially on the elderly. There are a few of the scams encountered with our mother.

Letters to the editor: Government can’t manage anything without high costs and going broke
No one is turning their backs on fellow citizens. It is about the government not being able to manage anything without high cost, red tape, exceeding budgets and then going broke.
Rheta Grimsley Johnson’s statement “the only part of the U.S. system that works well now is the part already run by the government.” This confirms her statement that she tries “not to listen the news.”

Letters to the editor: If other nations can have affordable health care, so can we
One big problem with our health system is the profit motive of health insurance companies.

Letters to the editor: Encourage son to put away video games and join scouts
If you are a yard sign reader, then by now you should have seen the ones that read, “We Build Character.” 2010 will mark the 100th anniversary of scouting. These signs are part of the anniversary campaign and are intended to try to bring boys back into scouting.
Letters to the editor: More thought should be given to ensuring sightly vegetation
This past Thursday, two Auburn city vehicles and workers stopped on our block on South Gay Street. At the northwest corner of the intersection with Meadowbrook Drive, they laid down some traffic cones and whacked branches and limbs from several trees along the west side of the street.
