There are readers who value their religion and just political system

As one who was raised in the Christian church, it was with great confusion that I read Mac Cutchins’ latest column. He seems to conclude that there is no danger in a Theocracy; the real danger is in the “Atheistocracy” that now controls our court decisions and schools.

Comparing public education to health care is comparing apples to oranges

As every president in the history of this country has made errors in judgment, so has George W. Bush. The difference is that President Bush is not the darling of the media as have been some other leaders of this country who not only made errors in judgment, but were morally corrupt before they ever reached the White House.

Letters: Care received at EAMC, from top to bottom, worth writing about

I recently had surgery at East Alabama Medical Center. I am compelled to tell everyone how positive my experience was while staying at the hospital.

Letters: Claims that Al Gore is a prophet have serious obstacles to cross

It is a sad commentary on post-Christian liberalism that a minister would confuse politics with prophecy. Nevertheless, Jim Evans hailed environmental doomsayer and former Vice President Al Gore as “a modern day prophet” who “speaks the truth to power about future consequences.”

Letters: Media does not work against the government, it works for it

In response to Edwin Slaten’s letter, it’s a true tragedy what the media in this country has come to. The person who actually believes what is said on Fox News and the like, is an ignorant fool.

Pair of letters’ arguments simply do not make sense

Two especially ridiculous letters have recently appeared in your paper. In Friday’s Opelika-Auburn News, Edwin Slaten asks us to believe that President Bush’s abysmal approval ratings are due not to his own actions, but because of a media conspiracy to hide all the wonderful things Bush has done! How stupid does Slaten think we are?

Bill proposed regarding two-year colleges and legislators preposterous

That a bill has been introduced that would require the rules and policies developed by the State Board of Education involving Alabama’s public two-year colleges to be reviewed by legislative council, which is made up of legislators is absolutely preposterous!

Government, news media not telling public what it needs to hear

When politicians have nothing substantive to offer to solve critical problems they go into posturing mode to try to make people believe they are serious about things.

Poole’s filibuster threats would hold up legislation once again

To the surprise of no one, the Alabama Senate has taken up where it left off in 2007. Sen. Phil Poole, D-Moundville, because of his childish desire for retribution, has again stuck his thumb in the eye of the voters. Poole’s off-the-wall rhetoric and threats to filibuster good legislation sponsored by Republicans is an affront to every Alabamian, including his own constituents.

Time for Democrats, Republicans to work together on 2-year college mess

To date, Federal prosecutors have nine convictions and two more indictments of Democratic legislators or others linked to the two-year college system. This may turn out to be the biggest political scandal in the history of Alabama.

Some misconceptions about cruises must be corrected

There was a long article, reprinted from the AP, in the Opelika-Auburn News, titled “Cruise Trends for 2008.”

Sen. McLaughlin’s PAC-to-PAC bill has more teeth than Mitchell’s

In a speech a few weeks ago, Sen. Wendell Mitchell, D-Luverne, complained that Gov. Bob Riley had the audacity to lead a campaign to raise money for Republican candidates in 2010.

Polls really have nothing to do with electing the president

In the Feb. 8 edition of the Opelika-Auburn News, the paper’s newest columnist (Brittany Branyon) jumped into the controversy over our involvement in Iraq with a handful of red herrings.

Evans column reads more of editorial content, less of religious content

For some time I have struggled without success to discover the reason Rev. Jim Evans’ column appears on the Religion page instead of the Editorial page. His clericalism is evident in the secular topics he discusses which rarely include matters of faith or of religion.

Bill Clinton should be remembered more for mistakes of immoral variety

I found it interesting that in his recent column on “admitting mistakes,” the Rev. Dr. Jim Evans would choose to bash President Bush as not being able to recognize or admit mistakes.

We must take strong, defensive action on those who prey on innocent

After Rudy Tidwell eloquently explained the tragedy of abortion, Ruth Gynther pointed to war and capital punishment as “long-standing examples of lack of respect for life.”

I just voted in a democracy, a brilliant democracy, but I don’t feel good about my vote.

Legislature urged to approve statewide smoke-free law

As the 2008 Legislature gets under way, I’d like to ask elected officials to support a statewide smoke-free law for Alabama.

Obama’s church does not cater to exclusive race

In his letter Tuesday, Harold Blackburn makes the convincing case that he is not racist and has no problem with an African-American candidate. But then in his last sentence he states that he is troubled by a “Muslim dedicated to Black Africa.”

February 04, 2008

What does one’s religion have to do with being elected president?

This is a response to Harold Blackburn’s letter concerning Barack Obama. So the swift boating begins. Blackburn insinuates that Obama is a Muslim. First, what if Obama were a Muslim? Does this disqualify him from becoming the next president of the United States?

Following precedent not good reason to accept something nobody likes

People who try to improve community conditions are called liberals. Conservatives try to keep the status quo. The latter frequently invites the former to “leave it if you do not like it.” The fact that we do not live in caves means liberals have prospered.
