Letter to the editor: Houses along Cedarbrook in Auburn deserve better fate
Today after helping move my daughter into her new apartment, I drove around Auburn a bit. I took my youngest son down Cedarbrook and it broke my heart.

Letter to the editor: U.S. consumers shouldn’t have to deal with service overseas
I retired from a retail sales company in 1992 after 37 years with a real company who valued their employees with the profit-sharing plan, plus many other benefits.

Letter to the editor: Protestantism on Court has become endangered species
In our nation where approximately 55 percent of the general population expresses the Protestant faith, it seems that three presidents, (Obama, Bush and Clinton) have ignored the demographic features of Protestantism for nominees on the Supreme Court.
Letter to the editor: Evans misses the point of the Good Samaritan story
I am writing in response to Jim Evans’ column in which he instructs us to support the current health care proposal because of the Biblical example given in the story of the Good Samaritan.

Letters to the editor: America sinking further into debt; Chinese ready to take cash in
A few nights ago I had an alarming dream. In my dream it was the year 2030 and I was listening to a federal newscast coming through a federal issued radio and given by a federal employee working for a federally owned radio network.

Letter to the editor: God does not cause bad things, but sin is the root of the problem
The answer for all death is sin. To all that want to blame God for all the bad things in the world — sickness, death, disease, murder, rape and still born babies — it is not God but sin that causes these things.

Letters to the editor: Elected leadership in Washington brain dead in foreign policy
As headlined on the front page of Opelika-Auburn News’ Sunday edition, it would appear our elected leadership in Washington is totally brain dead when it comes to foreign policy. A congressional rant has been started about the low number of Medal of Honor recipients during our Iraq/Afghanistan debacle.

Letters to the editor: Cash for Clunkers does nothing but work for a very few
Two juxtaposed headlines on the front page of Saturday’s Opelika-Auburn News are quite revealing about today’s state of affairs: “Cash for Clunkers, Here’s a program that seems to work,” and “Cubans being told to expect tough times.”

Letters to the editor: Young columnist right on the money regarding economy
I would like to comment on two seemingly unrelated articles in your newspaper.

Letter to the editor: Investigative reporters need to find answers on health care
Where has all the investigative reporting gone? Is no one out there asking any hard questions?

Letter to editor: Bible doesn’t mention fate of spontaneously aborted embryos
As expected, Bruce Murray has risen to confront the questions of my letter of July 29. In doing so he unabashedly puts himself into his god’s shoes, shoes resembling those of the Bible’s god, as though that deity were a fit candidate for any actual agent of cosmic creation — about which nobody knows anything anyway.

Letter to the editor: President, Congress need to leave private heath insurance alone
President Obama’s health care bill, which is currently being rushed through Congress, contains in its “Limitation on New Enrollment” section a provision outlawing the writing of any new individual health insurance policies.

Letter: Miller not “champion of academics” at Auburn University
I think Auburn President Jay Gouge has been fed a load of trustee propaganda about Jack Miller, and the Opelika-Auburn News has printed it as fact.
Letters to the editor: Freedom has allowed Americans to prosper over the years
Charlotte Ward prays for “fortitude to do the drastic things needed to make (America) again the land of freedom, justice, and opportunity for all.”

Letter to editor: Christians should be true to Bible-based tenets of faith
Dr. Jim Evans’ column on July 11 reports on the “serious reflection” by the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship on “what it means to love a neighbor,” especially as applied to Muslims. I appreciate, and agree, with much of his column but would like to comment on two points.

Letter to editor: Beloved author Hemphill deserved coverage in death
Paul James Hemphill, Auburn class of 1959, former sports editor of the Plainsman, author of 15 books, including “The Nashville Sound” and “Lovesick Blues” (a biography of Hank Williams), plus hundreds of newspaper columns and magazine articles, died on July 11. On July 12, the New York Times ran a four-column story on his life and accomplishments. Articles have appeared in the Chicago Sun-times, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette and the Atlanta Journal and Constitution.

Letter to the editor: Why can’t U.S. learn from other nations’ health care systems?
Let’s remind ourselves of a few facts about health care. Our nation spends roughly twice as much per person as other advanced countries but with inferior health outcomes.

Letters to the editor: If God is pro-life then why are some babies delivered stillborn?
While traveling in Ohio recently, I saw a bumper sticker saying, God is Pro-Life, doubtless a conviction espoused by many readers of this paper. This bit of bumper-sticker-theology, however, raises some questions.

Letters to the editor: State taxes should not support program that fails to report crime
This is in reply to Jessica Seales, Alabama Field Organizer of Planned Parenthood of Alabama in her June 27 letter to the editor in the Opelika-Auburn News. In all of her kudos, she failed to mention that Planned Parenthood is currently under investigation for covering up statutory rape.
Letter to the editor: Time for administration to take energy seriously
A writer recently decried the continuing use of fossil fuels as opposed to alternatives.
Letters to the editor: Chiroux handled situation wrong, but may have had right idea
It appears that Matthis Chiroux’s public declarations of dissent and refusal to obey official orders to deploy with his unit back into the Afghanistan/Iraq fiasco has emotionally charged some folks into demanding that he be court martialed. Regardless of Chiroux’s feeling about this war, he appears to have done everything the wrong way. He should have resigned immediately after returning from his first tour of duty over there, working the process from that point.
Letter to the editor: Chiroux could have served in Iraq in another capacity
Recently I watched a DVD based on true events of a Marine, Chance Phelps, serving in Iraq. He was killed and his remains were returned to his small hometown. His selfless service brought tears to my eyes and earned him my gratitude. We owe thanks to so many like this young Marine.

Letter to the editor: Washington pushing legislation that sounds good, but isn’t
After reading David Newton’s letter to the editor about global warming and our dependency on fossil fuels, I wanted to provide some type of public relations. There are many pushes with legislation in Washington to try and fix our country’s problems in these departments. Washington is pushing legislation that sounds appealing to the ear, and looks great on the outside, but in reality can do more harm than good to our environment and our economic viability.

Letter to editor: Country great because of men and women who serve
Major Charles William Lollis served our country until Feb. 6, 1968. He was killed during the Vietnam War (Tet offensive).

Letters to editor: Lee County DHR sponsoring Clothe-A-Child For School Project
The Lee County Department of Human Resources is again sponsoring the Clothe-A-Child For School Project. This project began in 1981 and has continued throughout the years as many children do not have warm, appropriate clothing for school. The Lee County DHR receives no state funding for this project; therefore, it depends entirely on financial donations.
Letter to the editor: Soldier who refuses Army orders should be court martialed
The Opelika Auburn News frequently publishes accounts of notable local people who have distinguished themselves by the truly outstanding manner in which they performed their duties in the course of their service to our country and our community. Most of the people you recognize in those stories don’t like being called heroes, but their actions speak for themselves and are inspirational.
Letters to the editor: Judy Jackson set example of service for us to follow
Since reading of the death of Judy Jackson in the Opelika-Auburn News on Thursday, I am reminded of how much she meant to the progress of the EAMC Volunteer Program (auxiliary).

Letters: Our Marxist leaders looking to hush anti-liberal speech
The Opelika-Auburn News had an AP article recently regarding U. S. Attorney General Holder’s call for a new hate crimes law. The article appeared throughout the country and was intended to win public support for the bill.

Letters to the editor: U.S. needs to move ahead with replacing fossil fuels
The following is the oath Mr. Chiroux took upon leaving Auburn High in 2002:

Letters: Obama praised for speaking out on behalf of fathers
I thank God for President Obama’s statement on fatherhood (Parade Magazine, June 21). He learned about fatherhood the hard way-through the absence of his father. Nothing hurts children more than an absent father. This leaves a void that can create life-long scars.
