Letter to editor: Does Sparks believe protester has right to disrupt cemetery?

Does Sparks believe protestor has right to disrupt cemetery?

Congressman Artur Davis appreciates that Councilman Arthur Dowdell and he have a difference of opinion on the propriety of violating private gravesites.

Davis also realizes that Dowdell may be unaware that during the Business Council of Alabama forum in August, Ron Sparks publicly announced his own opposition to the very health care bill that Dowdell criticizes Davis for opposing.

But two questions for Sparks: Does he agree with Davis that a private cemetery is sacred ground or does he agree with Dowdell that a protester has the right to disrupt a cemetery if he is offended by the gravesite?

Does Sparks stand by his opposition to the House health care bill or does he now join Councilman Dowdell in supporting the House bill which is widely opposed in our state?

Last week, the Sparks campaign touted the Dowdell endorsement in a press release, making this one more instance where Sparks has put principle on the back burner in order to pander for votes.

To “put principle on the back burner in order to pander for votes” might involve the health care reform position Congressman Davis has taken.  Then again, he’s been a Centrist, DLC type politician from the get go. If Commissioner Sparks did oppose health care reform while appearing before the BCA then perhaps he’s guilty as well. Then again ... this is an issue that Rep. Davis actually has a vote on up in DC.

While it is true that more disfavor health care reform in Alabama, it is hardly “widely opposed”.  Given the fact that state “leaders” of the Democratic Party have seldom if ever advocated for reform proposals the fact the numbers are as high as they are is a testament to reform’s staying power.

It also appears that these two men and their consultants are trying to run to the right, or at least the so called center, rather than staking out solid positions on the left and then demonstrating some backbone in defending the same.  One day perhaps Alabama voters will have assertive, savvy, and serious Democratic candidates to choose from in an election?
