Malcolm Cutchins: People deserve own choice for health care
A major concern about the current health care issue is who makes the decisions about care or no-care, and upon what do they base that decision.

Malcolm Cutchins: Apollo program tough to duplicate
Writing this on July 20, 2009 – the fortieth anniversary of the U.S. landing on the moon I have to reflect on that great feat and its implications for us today.

Malcolm Cutchins: Help can come in many fashions
One of the headlines on page 1 of this newspaper on July 8, was “Dowdell seeks help in representing Ward 1.” Readers will recall all of the cemetery/Confederate Flag publicity. Consider the four paragraphs below to be an open letter to Arthur offering “help.”

Malcolm Cutchins: It only takes a generation to lose the real meaning of our heritage
Kudos to Hobby Lobby for their excellent July 4th full page ad in this newspaper with quotes from five of our early presidents, three of our Founding Fathers, and three of our Supreme Court justices, a couple of congressmen and two Supreme Court rulings. There were two observations each about education and by foreigners. These quotations emphasize principles about our country that are severely threatened by recent political “change.” It behooves us all to learn much more about our nation’s true history before the distortions (or complete omissions) totally replace the foundations that built this great country.

Malcolm Cutchins: Scorching heat isn’t going anywhere soon
The scorching heat lately is a strong reminder of one of the billboards (seen usually in Florida) that proclaims, “So you think it’s hot here … God.”

Malcolm Cutchins: Signs point toward better days ahead
Locally there are signs that things are getting better. Of several acquaintances, for example, one is refinancing a home with a local bank at almost one percent lower interest.
Another’s IRA’s gained over 6 percent just in the last month. Two other friends decided to leave good positions they have had for some time for significantly higher salaries and better, but similar, positions.

Malcolm Cutchins: More on Tiller, his clinic and his murder
The murder of widely known, late-term abortionist, Dr. George Tiller in Kansas is certainly inexcusable.

Malcolm Cutchins: Boy Scout banquet worth attending
This column is based partly on a 1,400-word essay by my home-schooled Eagle Scout grandson. Chosen as the best composition at a community college in northern Kentucky, the quotes about scouting are from his essay.

Malcolm Cutchins: The intolerant no more special than anyone
Last week, I described the vicious, gratuitous attacks on Carrie Prejean, Miss California, by those of the homosexual persuasion. On page two of the sports section on the very same day, another example of outlandish intolerance by homosexual leaders appeared in an article about Tony Dungy, the retired head coach of the Indianapolis Colts.

Malcolm Cutchins: Tea Party-goers deserve more respect
There have been bizarre cartoons depicting T.E.A. Parties as rallies of rabble-rousers. Much smaller rallies held for more politically correct reasons have enjoyed more positive national headlines.
The rally in Auburn was attended by doctors, lawyers, judges, dentists, research professors, gubernatorial candidates, teachers, patriots, veterans, young people and old people — a real cross-section of America. They deserve much more respect.

Malcolm Cutchins: Big year for AU men’s hoops team
The Auburn men’s basketball team had an outstanding year. Individual players have been well recognized on the sports pages.

Malcolm Cutchins: Polarized America split on Obama
One could surmise that everything about our current president is just fine – if they listen only to liberal media outlets. But Camelot is by no means what we have. “Change you can count on” is showing up to be chains for those who can’t count, along with those who can.

Malcolm Cutchins: We have burdened our grandchildren
There are not many days left before the annual tax filing deadline of April 15.

Malcolm Cutchins: Obama used AIG outrage to distract
The anger about the bonuses paid to AIG executives is certainly understandable.

Malcolm Cutchins: Paul Harvey had something good to say
In light of all the negative news from almost every national news outlet, we need to really work at having more emphasis on good news. That’s not easy to do, and, unfortunately, it probably doesn’t “sell” as well either.

Malcolm Cutchins: Time to read the road signs ahead
In Sunday’s snowstorm, I photographed a stop sign whose surface was totally obliterated with horizontally blown snow. Symbolically, there are other obscured signs that may not warn us of dangerous situations ahead unless we become much more observant.

Malcolm Cutchins: Stimulus plan reckless, undermining
I have a Snoopy tie that I often wear near April 15 in “honor” of taxes being due on that date. On the tie are a few dollar signs, some calculators and Snoopy hard at work. Last weekend I wore the tie early, a tongue-in-cheek “honor” for the stimulus bill followed by the “White House Conference on Fiscal Responsibility.”

Malcolm Cutchins: Digging deeper into Darwin’s quote book
In keeping with his 200th year celebration, here are some more of Charles Darwin’s words ... probably far more significant than his speculations on the eye. Darwin wrote in his famous book on origins and favored races, “I am well aware that there is scarcely a single point discussed in this volume on which facts cannot be advanced, often leading to conclusions directly opposite to those at which I have arrived. A fair result could be attained only by fully stating and balancing the facts on both sides of each question …”

Malcolm Cutchins: Was Darwin really a theologian?
This year is the 200th anniversary of Charles Darwin’s birth and the 500th anniversary of John Calvin’s birth. Both were theologians, but many scientists try to cover up that fact about Darwin. His supporters also like to conveniently omit the latter part of the title of Darwin’s famous book published 150 years ago.

Malcolm Cutchins: Follow Scouts’ lead and ‘be prepared’
My daughter, son-in-law and their three boys still at home have been without power since Jan. 27 in northern Kentucky.

Malcolm Cutchins: ‘I would choose Johnny every time’
January has been “Sanctity of Human Life Month.” There are few better examples of honoring the choice of life than Coach Gene Stallings and his wife Ruth Ann and their Down syndrome child, John.

Malcolm Cutchins: King, Lee knew best how to handle issues
This past Monday’s official holiday designation is “Martin Luther King, Jr. and Robert E. Lee Day” in honor of two men who battled in different ways; one for his race, one for his country, both for important principles.

Malcolm Cutchins: Long-term policies need stability
It is extremely important for long-term federal government policies to be stable. Citizens and businesses that actually earn the money and plan ahead should be protected from the whims of a political party or a charismatic leader.

Malcolm Cutchins: Forecasters keep blocking weather maps
I have several New Year’s resolutions to suggest: 1) for TV weather forecasters — I will not stand in front of the weather maps this year; 2) for radio and some TV stations, and those who prepare material for them — we will repeat the exact same advertising spots only 1,000 times this year instead of the usual 10,000; and 3) for political and football-coach analysts — we will only tell what is true.

Malcolm Cutchins: New Year is a time for reflection
As the New Year rolls in today, most of us will make some kind of an assessment of 2008. The events of the past year have certainly reminded us that material things (and even football team success, for example) can vanish in a hurry and we dare not consider them to be worthy of worship or elevate them to invincible status.

Malcolm Cutchins: Time for Auburn fans to unite
There is nothing wrong with high expectations for AU’s football program. The problem is the bad public relations (PR) we generate by not having a more unified fan base. It hurts recruiting. It hurts us in the national media. Its cumulative effects probably kept us out of the national championship game after the 2004 season. It most likely had a lot to do with Miami leaping over AU to win the national AP title at the end of the 1983 season.

Malcolm Cutchins: Christmas gifts can be educational
What parent doesn’t want their children to grow up with discernment about what is important and what is not, to enjoy adventure and to learn of history? Christmas is a good time to give gifts that not only entertain but also teach some of these things.

Malcolm Cutchins: When did virtue leave our behavior?
In our much-polarized country, I suspect we can nearly all agree on one observation: young men can be trained to hate, to terrorize, to do unspeakable and barbarian acts against other people.

Malcolm Cutchins: Media failed to ‘expose’ their chosen man
In any post mortem of our recent historic election, the failure of the national television news to expose (with their vast journalistic resources) the shortcomings, or even the record, of their “adopted” candidate has to stand at the top of the list.

Malcolm Cutchins: Marriage, family win on Election Day
There was some good news concerning Election Day (unfortunately no longer one day as our Constitution dictates).
