Mike Hubbard on bingo: Legalizing casinos would be bad bet for Alabama
Before we can begin to discuss what approach Alabama should take toward gambling within its borders, we must first establish some basic facts.

Mike Hubbard: Riley is best governor in Alabama history
There have been several people who have influenced me politically, including President Ronald Reagan and my good friend, Congressman Mike Rogers.

Mike Hubbard: Commission needs more power to investigate
For the last several legislative sessions, Republicans in the Alabama House and Senate have proposed a package of tough ethics reform bills designed to hold public officials accountable for their actions.

Mike Hubbard: AEA’s response display of political misdirection
When a Republican gubernatorial candidate recently questioned several actions, goals and initiatives of the Alabama Education Association, the group’s leadership hollered loudly and cried foul. I, personally, believe the response was an elaborate display of political misdirection in which the group flailed its right arm wildly in order to avert attention from what its left arm was doing.

Mike Hubbard: Admiration comes from Democrats switching parties
When the Opelika-Auburn News asked me to write a column detailing what I admire about the Alabama Democratic Party, I must admit that I was somewhat taken aback.

Mike Hubbard: Republican Party is the real party of change
During the most recent presidential election cycle, there was much talk about the Democratic Party being the party of “change.” Barack Obama relentlessly promoted himself as the messiah of change and promised that he, along with Congressional Democrats, could easily and instantly fix the ills of the nation. Their results, needless to say, have not matched their rhetoric.

Mike Hubbard: Staggering price tag too much for citizens to bear
As President Obama continues to push, prod and cajole our country to the farthest left of the political spectrum, his progress is being impeded by looming obstacles blocking his path – his own ideas and proposals.

Mike Hubbard: Vote to protect and defend what we celebrate this weekend
This weekend, citizens across the country will gather with family and friends to celebrate our nation’s independence and the collective and individual rights that we hold dear. Unfortunately, at the same time these celebrations occur, those very same rights are under threat from a left-leaning Democrat Party intent upon bloating government at all levels and restricting our God-given
freedoms.

Mike Hubbard: Legislative session most productive in years
The recently concluded 2009 regular legislative session proved to be one of the most productive in years. The successes, however, were tainted by the passage of a pork-laden General Fund budget and the killing of anti-corruption and ethics reform legislation.

Mike Hubbard: Successful session tainted by pork projects
The recently concluded regular legislative session proved to be one of the most productive in years. The successes, however, were tainted by the passage of a pork-laden General Fund budget and the killing of anti-corruption and ethics reform legislation.

Mike Hubbard: Time for Washington to wake up and smell reality
Nearly 233 years ago, the founders of this nation had enough of an oppressive government that was out of touch with the people of our new country. They were represented by a government that continually passed repressive measures – strangling the foothold of freedom.

Mike Hubbard: Did anyone really read the stimulus bill?
The more it is analyzed and dissected, I am increasingly convinced that not a single congressman who supported Barack Obama’s $787 billion “stimulus” package even bothered to read the 1,200-page bill before casting his vote.

Mike Hubbard: Education, general funds offer challenges
There is little doubt that the 2009 legislative session will be a difficult one on a number of fronts. The largest hurdle, however, will be crafting the education and general fund budgets with the revenue available.

Mike Hubbard: Removing four percent sales tax on food OK, method the issue
During my decade of service in the Alabama House of Representatives, I have yet to meet a single member of either party who believes the idea of removing the sales tax from groceries is a bad one. However, there is a wide chasm of disagreement between Democrats and Republicans about the best method of doing it.

Mike Hubbard: McCain clearly the right choice
Much like the election of Ronald Reagan in 1980, the upcoming presidential election on Tuesday could very well be a defining one for our country, and its outcome could determine the philosophical direction of the United States for a generation or more to come.

Mike Hubbard: Rogers the clear choice for district
In November, voters will have a critical choice to make. They can choose to vote for a conservative reformer who splits with his Party on issues important to the citizens he represents, or they can cast a ballot for an inexperienced newcomer with opinions and positions on the far liberal left, well outside those of mainstream Alabamians.

Mike Hubbard: National convention means busy week ahead
During the first week of September, the Republican National Committee will hold its convention in Minneapolis-St. Paul, Minn., for the purpose of nominating our choice for president and vice president of the United States.

Mike Hubbard: 2008 session one of worst in memory
The 2008 Regular Session of the Alabama Legislature must be considered among the worst in recent memory due largely to the lack of meaningful legislation passed and the Senate’s failure to approve an education budget before adjournment. The few legitimate successes in the session did not result from bills being passed, but from Republican efforts to defeat several bad bills introduced by Democrats.
