Paul Davis: Knology isn’t a panacea, but it’s an improvement
Remember when you could watch TV with the rabbit ears that came with your set? First thing in the morning you’d stop by the TV, turn it on and go to the kitchen and start your morning coffee while all the tubes warmed up and brought the screen to life, both channels.

Paul Davis: Opening meetings, case closed
I am not a quitter, usually. Most of the time, I have given up involved debates with my bride. I usually pose, back away, and pout. We built a home last year. I mean, she and daughter-in-law built a new home at Lake Martin. I made one suggestion and it was shot down quicker than a quail over a baited field. I made no other suggestions.

Paul Davis: Harper Lee’s words not heard enough
I sat through a play last Tuesday night which was based on Harper Lee’s classic book, “To Kill a Mockingbird.” It was an admirable production presented by the Montana Repertory Theater as part of the wonderful series of performances brought to the community by the Arts Association of East Alabama.

Paul Davis: Who’s screaming for welfare of Bryce patients?
I doubt that you can find anyone in any county, any city, any hamlet or any crossroad in Alabama who does not know the name “Bryce.”

Paul Davis: University of Alabama should give Bryce a break
The University of Alabama does several things very well. First and foremost, it wins football games. It also provides good education opportunities for its students, and it generally gets what it wants. It’s doing quite well on the first of those three objectives. The fourth, however has hit a snag.

Paul Davis: Very difficult to kiss mother goodbye
I got to kiss her goodbye one more time. I have been kissing on her for more than 70 years, each one very special. But the last one was bittersweet.

Paul Davis: Lowder story in Fortune worth reading
Fortune magazine, a Time Warner publication, sent one of its senior writers, Brian O’Keefe who is based in New York, flying south recently to put together a major story on the rise and fall of one of Auburn’s newest residents, Bobby Lowder.
Paul Davis: Issue of race over our president draws concern
The jury may still be out, but I grow increasingly concerned about the issue of race in this country and about our collective attitude toward having, for the first time our history, a black man serving as our president.

Paul Davis: Town Hall brawls perfect for television
There are several lineup changes for the fall on your television schedule. A couple of them I found interesting. Auburn football is rated so low that most of its games will not be televised on big-boy TV, but will be shifted to a new network referred to as ESPNU. Find it if you can.

Paul Davis: Your letters, good or bad, are welcome here
I often learn much more from reading the comments sent in from readers than I do from columnists themselves. I especially enjoy reading letters to the editor. They give much insight into what the general population is thinking.

Paul Davis: Colonial, Bobby Lowder’s power continues to dwindle
It is over. Bobby Lowder’s Colonial Bank is dead along with his powerful control over Auburn University. That’s terrible news for the thousands of Colonial Bank employees but wonderful news for Auburn University.

Paul Davis: New ‘sheriff’ making changes at Auburn
Would you like a Ph.D degree from a major university without all the hassle of years and years of study and research? Would you like you get that degree in just over a year while being on the university payroll at $60,000 a year?

Paul Davis: Dr. Blanton helped heal Selma
Dr. Claiborne Blanton went to the cabbage patch quite often. He knew all the magical wonders of that place whence all babies were to be found, brought there by another magical wonder, the stork.

Paul Davis: A fresh attempt at retirement
I had a long discussion recently with my bride with regard to my plans to once again try retirement. After a bout of major surgery a couple of years ago, I tried retirement. Weeks in the bed were not the best way to launch retirement. I finally decided if I didn’t get up, shave; put on my britches and a tie, I was going to die.

‘He was a great American’
I was one of the lucky ones. After moving into our new two-story home in Tuscaloosa, I received an upgrade in my accommodations. I was elevated to an upstairs bedroom, about 20 feet from the luxurious attic fan.

Paul Davis: Will Alabama elect a black man governor?
Will a state which denied a majority vote to the nation’s first black president be willing to take a close look at a black man, Harvard educated and a United States congressman, who wants to become Alabama’s next governor?

Paul Davis: How the mighty have fallen
So what’s next? We all reach certain milestones in our lives at different times and in different ways. So, what’s next for banking’s former king, Bobby Lowder?

Paul Davis: Pharmacy has everything some folks need
Jacob, age 92, and Rebecca, age 89, met in Auburn after independently selecting the city as a retirement home. Both were Auburn University grads, but were students at different times and had never met.

Paul Davis: ‘Honorable’ best describes Bailey, Brewer
Dr. Gerald Johnson faced a formidable task. He had to introduce one great man and remember another of the state’s icons. His affection for both was obvious, and obviously equal.

Paul Davis: Community newspapers still doing well
Hi, Billy Mays here to tell you about the wonders of OxiClean, the all new, improved, state-of-the-art, clinically tested, FDA approved, Pope-blessed, Army- and housewife-approved cleaning miracle.

Paul Davis: Dowdell displayed intolerance and hate, too
You are an elected official, a minister and dream of one-day being regarded as some sort of civil rights leader. You are failing on two out of three items of your agenda. I’m not in a position to comment on your prowess in the pulpit, but if it follows your public acts, you most likely also are failing your flock.

Paul Davis: Cover-up may be worse than crime in Tallassee
Tallassee is a beautiful, resilient community, split right down the middle by the Tallapoosa River. The city sits in two counties, Elmore and Tallapoosa. The river is harnessed by the mighty Thurlow Dam, a major hydroelectric power plant operated by Alabama Power Company.

Paul Davis: Never met a student the likes of Jake Giambrone
Jake Giambrone is a remarkable, much loved young man. I have known him since he was a toddler. He lived near my grandson, Blanton, and they were buddies in the early years. Jake lives in a different world today, unable to do some very simple tasks, yet able in other ways to conquer the work with his beautiful mind.

Paul Davis: With investors, what will become of Colonial?
Something strange happened between The Ides of March and April Fool’s Day. It was the demise, or the beginning of the demise of the $26 billion empire that is or was Colonial Bank.

Paul Davis: Isn’t state GOP Chair double-dipping too?
The biggest battle in Montgomery right now is supposed to be conflict between Republican Gov. Bob Riley and the state’s Democrat-controlled legislature. But that’s not the case at the moment.

Paul Davis: Octomom has 14 kids, but so do I
That woman in California, known as the Octomom, has 14 kids. Big deal! I have 14 kids, but don’t receive nearly as much attention and have never been offered a reality show. In fact, I’m running away from reality.

Paul Davis: Gen. Hal Moore the perfect example of honor
He stood at the edge of the woods, near the tree line, a camp fire flickering behind him. A cascade of memories flooded his mind and brought a teary mist to his eyes. As he looked into the sky his breath was taken away. There dancing across the horizon were a thousand, no a million, stars in all their glory streaking their way through the heavens.

Paul Davis: Faith-based initiatives with foundations
What in the world is a church doing building houses for the poor, paying utility bills, putting on new roofs, adding a toilet to a house? I mean millions of dollars.
