Fredonia:Family, history ... and barbecue
Founded in 1840, Fredonia, was a “center for commerce” back in the day, according to resident Gurson Brown. There were saloons, stables, a blacksmith, two cotton gins, a brothel “and a church,” he proclaimed. Jack Cumbee, who’s family name is on the Old Fredonia (Cumbee) Store that stands abandoned on the corner of County Roads 222 and 267, said he read in the records that Fredonia had 17 stores in the 1850s.
But when the railroad bypassed the small town located northeast of LaFayette in Chambers County, and connected Five Points with Roanoke instead, Brown said things changed. Eventually, Fredonia was just another small town, the kind of place you can drive through and not even know it.
