The Talladega PA guy made a booboo Chris Berman would’ve loved to make a sound effect for.

While announcing the driver lineup, he got to Kasey Kahne, who will start 35th. Instead, for some reason, he called him this guy.

Not sure where that came from.

Just a reminder

T-minus 36 minutes until the world’s largest chicken dance.

I didn’t notice any PETA folks on my way in, but that’s not to say they aren’t here.

Gentlemen, start your engines, aight?

I have just been informed, while this may be already well-established news, that Alabama head tackle football coach Nick Saban will be the one to say those words later today.

My blog: Keeping you informed.

Greetings from the Ken Patterson Media Center

By some minor miracle, I woke up, made it to Talladega, somehow found where to get my credentials and then somehow wandered into the media center.

Just for reference: Talladega employees are not incredibly helpful.

Anyway, in my typical fashion, I made it up here with my camera but left it in my truck, which is just enough of a hike to deter me from going to get it. I do have a flip video with me, which I plan on using in some fashion.

Esteemed Dothan Eagle sports editor and Media General colleague Jon Johnson will be providing you with the race recap later today, while I’ll be doing a notebook and maybe another story.

I apologize in advance.

Anyway, I’ll pass along a few updates here and there on what’s happening.

For instance:

Aaron’s extends title sponsorship at Talladega Superspeedway
TALLADEGA - Talladega Superspeedway is proud to announce that Aaron’s Rents, Inc., has extended its contract for title sponsorship on both the Aaron’s 312 NASCAR Nationwide Series race and the Aaron’s 499 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race. The nation’s leader in rental sales and lease ownership activated a clause in its contract that allows the company to extend its role as title sponsor for multiple years.

Both sides went on to congratulate each other in the rest of the press release. So I guess the funky mileage is here to stay, at least for the forseeable future.

And, in case you don’t already know, here’s today’s lineup:

1. Juan Pablo Montoya
2. Greg Biffle
3. Martin Truex Jr.
4. Sam Hornish Jr.
5. Clint Bowyer
6. Regan Smith
7. Mark Martin
8. Scott Speed
9. Brad Keselowski
10. David Ragan
11. Dale Earnhardt Jr.
12. Bobby Labonte
13. Matt Kenseth
14. Jeff Gordon
15. Casey Mears
16. Carl Edwards
17. Joe Nemechek
18. Denny Hamlin
19.  Kevin Harvick
20. Jeff Burton
21. Scott Riggs
22. Joey Logano
23. Kyle Busch
24. Paul Menard
25. Ryan Newman
26. David Gilliland
27. Jeremy Mayfield
28. Kurt Busch
29. Tony Stewart
30. Brian Vickers
31. Michael Waltrip
32. Jamie McMurray
33. David Reutimann
34. Marcos Ambrose
35. Kasey Kahne
36. Jimmie Johnson
37. David Stremme
38. A.J. Allmendinger
39. Elliott Sadler
40. John Andretti
41. Reed Sorenson
42. Robby Gordon
43. Max Papls

I can’t tell if that last name is spelled correctly. The press release is smudged there. And Sorenson and R. Gordon had qualified higher, but apparently they’re dirty cheaters or something and only made it into the race on owner’s points.

In order to be inconspicuous I’ve changed into my Dale Earnhardt Jr. gear and started booing Jeff Gordon already. But mostly I’m fuming that I didn’t get a sweet fire suit like the FOX, ESPN and SPEED folks.

Enjoy the race.

Wrote a feature on congenital amputee Kyle Maynard, who made some national headlines by fighting an MMA event tonight. You can see ace reporter David Morrison’s account of the actual fight here.

In other news, I’ll be making my first-ever trip to a NASCAR race tomorrow for what will also be the first time I’ll be expected to contribute something of substance at a reasonably large event. I’m not sure how coherent I’ll be (hint: I don’t wake up early, which I’ll have to do to get to Dega in time), but I will try to blog from Talladega, and will have a camera for a photo or two and maybe even a video camera.
